Hi! My name is Rane! And I'm currently a 2nd Yr Psychology student. As a young individual living in the Philippines, I am exposed to a multitude of contemporary pop culture, both local and internationally. Though I share interest and liking to both kinds, I consider Philippine pop culture as something close to my heart as a young Filipino citizen. I think it showcases the creativity and wit us Filipinos poses in a manner that everyone from society has something they can enjoy. Mine happens to be mainly music; I enjoy the indie OPM bands and artists with their meaningful lyrics and musical arrangements. That makes up most of my interests, but I also find films interesting, Filipinos have a knack for good romance and honestly I love it so much. Apart from entertainment, I also enjoy the time to time factual content of news and documentaries. A lot of world-renowned journalists are from the Philippines that feature a lot of interesting and ground-breaking content about our country. Matter of fact I may have a slight crush on Mr. Atom Araullo. And as a college student, of course the UAAP is quite a hit among us, supporting our selected teams on certain sports, and I for one enjoy watching volleyball, and anticipate the games each season. And lastly one aspect has taken a pique on interest recently and it has been innovative Filipino designers, fashion has not been always interesting to me but I got intrigued by their current projects that feature resources and fabrics that are rare here in the country such as utilizing unique plant fibers and giving homage to traditional Philippine clothing as designs.

The Philippine Pop Culture that I would like to give feature here would be the Philippine Music industry, more specifically the newly up and rising PH indie bands and artists. A lot of us may recognize and my even be an avid fan of these names; Ben & Ben, Lola Amour, Sunkissed Lola, The Ridleys, Over October, Cup of Joe, and many more. These bands have currently taken over mainstream OPM as they charm their listeners with their poetic lyrics and ever so captivating melodies. I have always personally enjoyed the genre of band music; the acoustics, the crisp sound of the instruments, beautiful vocals, and of course the performances. Artists like such are not new, but have been part of the history of PH Pop Culture way before. Names such as APO Hiking Society, Eraserheads, Itchyworms, Orange and Lemons, Up Dharma Down, Hale and many more have once also taken the spotlight and are even considered pioneers and foundation of OPM.

The Uses and Gratification Theory suggest that the media individuals consume are not solely passive, but are rather actively chosen by them, to fit their uses and likes; we choose what we want to enjoy rather than just enjoying what is presented to us. With this music in the Philippine Pop Culture creates change in a way that it can become a channel to express and to understand. Most songs that people consume have lyrics that are based of philosophical and/or emotional meanings, but it is not limited to that. If we observe the previous political presidential campaign there it is a prime example of how music was a key part of change. Both candidates used songs, to spread their message and platform, and to call out to the Filipinos. And during their gatherings and significant events, these songs were played as a reminder of celebration, comfort, and camaraderie.

Semiotics suggests that there is an underlying code in things that are not explicitly shown and must be decoded. Music being an art of words and melody, this can be observed; may it be a hidden metaphor in the songs, or utilization of melodies that may have significant historic meanings. Music being something that almost everyone adheres to, it can be used as a prime channel of sharing information and starting movements. With the use of semiotics, it can be an agent of change and even unity in society.
