Then, at Auschwitz Helga fooled the infamous Josef Mengele into thinking she was older. From there, she saved her mother and herself from the gas chambers and immediate death. Helga was soon transported to another camp, Mauthausen. She arrived after a mass killing, which saved her life for a second time. She stayed at Mauthausen until the Liberation by the U.S. Army in 1945.

Did you know that she and her father were separated to go to death camps at a young age? Helga describes her longing for her dad in her diary. She had won many awards like the Medal of Merit, and an honorary Doctorate from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston for her lifetime achievements.
