Details: In October 1944, Helga was transported to Auschwitz from Terezin and was part of the 100 only children who survived out of 15,000. Then, at Auschwitz Helga fooled the infamous Josef Mengele into thinking she was older. From there, she saved her mother and herself from the gas chambers and immediate death. Helga was soon transported to another camp, Mauthausen. She arrived after a mass killing, which saved her life for a second time. She stayed at Mauthausen until the Liberation by the U.S. Army in 1945.
Dates: October 1944
Significant Facts: Did you know Helga wrote a diary? She used her art and writing skills to " draw what you see."
Did you know that she and her father were separated to go to death camps at a young age? Helga describes her longing for her dad in her diary. Did you know that Helga was expelled from school for being Jewish, and had to go to one for Jews only?

To learn more about my topic, Peoplepill and The Irish Times were very helpful for me. I also wanted to share a quote from Helga Weiss, "I cannot get my breath I always think about the prisoners in Mauthausen, in the quarry. They had to walk with heavy stones on their back. Now, every day when I am climbing the stairs, I remember these people. Sometimes I forget names but never the faces. Never the faces. Sometimes I see on the street a piece of bread, or a piece of food thrown away. In the camps, a piece of bread could save somebody’s life.”
