Sara Fortis was a partisan fighting against the Nazis to protect the Jews. Sara Fortis was born in 1927 in Chalkis, Greece. Sara identified as 100% Greek but still celebrated being Jewish by lighting candles every Friday and attending temples on Jewish holidays. Sara's father only passed away when she was two months old, so she never got to know him. Sara and her sister were raised by their mother, and lived a happy childhood together.

Sara was living a good life while working at a young age, but in 1941, Germans had arrived in her hometown. Sara and her mother had left their hometown so they wouldn't get caught by the Germans since they celebrated the things Jews celebrate. Sara found out that Jews were being deported by Nazis and never coming back. Sara was told to escape while the villagers agreed to hide her mother. Sara decided to become a Andarte[Resistance fighter]. Sara traveled from village to village to find women who were willing to fight. Sara became a prominent and well-respected figure in the Andartes' movement in Greece. Sara and her group had to execute Nazi collaborators in order to protect the Jews. Nazis were sent to try and capture Sara but they captured her cousin and did horrible things to her then killed her. Once Sara found out, she wanted revenge. Sara hunted down the Nazi that killed her cousin and killed him. Later during the war, Sara was known as 'Kapetenissa[captain] Sarika'.

The Impact from the War.

Due to the war and the hatred for Jews caused a separation between Sara and her mother. The impact from the war made Sara a captain to the group of women who were willing to fight with her. The impact from the war also got Sara arrested but made her a prominent and well-respected figure in the movement in Greece. After the war, the Andartes fell out of favor with the new Greek government.
