I've seen that in the reading, Jackson create suspense by showing the character's nervousness in the event of the lottery. In addition, the way everyone is hesitant to approach the black box shows that the people of the village are apprehensive, or perhaps fearful, of the events tied with that box, furthering the suspense of the situation.

Jackson creates suspense by giving excessive amounts of background information. Although a good way to introduce the tradition, it does stall the story when you know a game of chance is about to be had. Shirley Jackson also set up many potential conflicts that would linger on and threaten the expected outcome, but eventually return to normal before another would occur; never knowing what else could come up. She also withholds
information from us, as I still have no idea what or why the lottery is.

By using characters' points of views on the subject as well as details about themselves, it suspends the audience.
