María is a young girl who illegally immigrated from El Salvador to Chicago by being trapped in a crate. She traveled with older sister Julia, younger sickly brother Oscar, and a boy her age named Tomás. She left her family after they were attacked by the Guardia. After settling in Chicago, María and the others go to drastic measures to make money for food, and to send to her mother and youngest sister. María is in the constant fear that one day she will be caught and deported back home to the danger.

One main example symbolism are the birds flying free, guiding the immigrants to safety. Often María would think about the sparrow and would not be scared anymore because she knew the bird would guide her to help. Also the sparrows represent the immigrants and their journey to a new home.
