Postpartum depression is a diagnosis that is misunderstood, stigmatized, and little to no knowledge is provided to new parents upon discharge.

This is a photo of my Registered Practical Nurse and Trent Nursing Student badge. These roles, along with the quote I created, reflect the importance of continued learning, reflection, and growth. Through my journey as an RPN to RN student and eventually RN, I have come to identify that leadership requires one to be mindful and intentional in identifying gaps in knowledge. Being a leader is accepting that no one person can have the answer to everything; we must understand that the roots of nursing are grounded in teamwork and collaborative practice.

I'm able to accept and acknowledge through the lens of relational inquiry that I am still learning and can make unintentional assumptions or biases towards others. By acknowledging this, it allows me to critically reflect, identify areas for continued education, and improve my practice. Implementing these strategies allows me to continue to improve the care I provide, ensuring it is both patient-centred and culturally safe.

This is a photograph of my stethoscope that symbolizes therapeutic communication in nursing. The quote I wrote above the photo, “Ears That Listen Respond, Ears That Hear Connect”, reflects the difference between quickly responding based on what a patient says versus processing, truly hearing and connecting with our patients. Although a stethoscope is a tool for physical assessment, it may be used as a reminder that as nurses, we must be empathetic, emotionally present, and intentional in our interactions.

Through the lens of relational inquiry, this reminds me of the importance of building trust, therapeutic relationships and going beyond meeting patient physical needs. Unfortunately, patients are often left feeling like tasks, a simple check on the to-do list by healthcare professionals, but when we stop and hear instead of listening to respond, we can create connections.

I wrote this piece of reflective poetry to emphasize the importance of mindfulness in nursing practice. As nurses, we often make the mistake of blindly assuming that we know what patients are going through and why they behave a certain way. However, by being aware and practicing mindfulness, we can take time to step back, listen, look, and learn to provide better care and connection with our patients. This piece demonstrates that by incorporating mindfulness practices in nursing, so that we can grow, reduce stigma and provide compassionate care.

I started meditating years ago however wasn’t consistent in my practices till last year as a new graduate registered practical nurse. I was struggling with pre-shift anxiety, which is unfortunately common among nurses. Reflecting, practicing guided meditations allowed me to be my best self at work, reflect on my practice and relieved my anxiety significantly. This is a self-care tool I know I can always come back to.

Artifact 2: "Drawing the Line Between Selfless and Self-Care, We Are a Priority"

This artifact is a photo I took in the hospital parking lot after a night shift of the sunrise. I included a quote I created as well, “Drawing the Line Between Selfless and Self-Care, We Are a Priority”. This photo and quote symbolize a common battle in nursing, that we are human too, and we matter. Working the night shift allows me the opportunity to see this sunrise after every shift. As I leave the parking lot, I always recognize how quiet the world is in that moment, allowing my mind to finally rest after what can be an emotional and physically demanding shift. This moment reminds me that even though nursing is rooted in selflessness and empathy, I must show up the same way for myself. Adjusting my mindset was essential to create balance in my professional and personal life. I have many roles and identities, I am a nurse, nursing student, daughter, partner, and friend. In order for me to provide safe, compassionate care, and have a sustainable career, I’ve learned that I must set boundaries and remember that it is not optional to neglect my self-care needs. Outside the hospital, I am a priority.

This photo was retrieved from Padlet, and to some, it is just someone smoking a cigarette. However, this picture holds significant meaning to me. It is a reminder that making quick judgments, assumptions, and stigmatizing patients happens every day, and they can be quite harmful. This photo reminds me of new parents being told that there are some complications with their newborn baby, and how, in that moment, to cope, they went out for a cigarette. I often recall the reactions of co-students and the nurses being so negative, I was able to be mindful and recognize that this is how they cope. I reflect on this often and use it as a reminder to practice with compassion and not judgment.

This artifact is a photo of my completed Crisis Prevention Institute training card. I completed this training prior to my clinical rotations in NURS 2021. This course represents more than communication in a crisis, in personal safety techniques. To me, it represented the importance of being aware of both physical and verbal language, respecting our patients and recognizing the importance of therapeutic communication to provide safe care. This taught me to recognize feelings and emotions, and the barriers that can be created in care. Individuals have many needs, and if all needs aren’t met, emotional, physical, and psychosocial, it limits the ability to heal.

Through the lens of relational inquiry, I understand that being mindful and putting myself in the position of the patient allows me to reflect on the care they may require, outside of what they may be able to tell me they require. This doesn't necessarily mean that I think I know what is best, however allows me to generate ideas that may align with the patient's needs. I keep this card in my wallet as a reminder of my education and professional commitment to safety, and through communication, we can create a therapeutic connection.

This artifact is a copy of the Wong-Baker FACES pain scoring tool. I find that this is a tool that is not commonly used in practice. Typically, nurses can ask their patients what their pain score is verbally. But what happens when there is a language barrier and no access to a translator? The answer to this question is that the patient is put at a significant safety risk. A few months ago, I found myself in this position. I had a patient who only spoke Vietnamese. She understood no English.

I recognized that this was a significant issue, as this particular patient had recently fractured her hip. I immediately decided that communication, even without words, needed to be established. It didn't take me very long to find a copy of the Wong-Baker FACES pain translate it into both Vietnamese and English, as seen above. The patient was able to gesture to the sheet and indicate how much pain she was in.

I often remember how happy she was when I handed her the translation. She, in Vietnamese she grabbed my hand and smiled. This experience helped me grow and recognize that something as simple as this can protect patients and promote cultural safety in a meaningful way.
