orders.) A few reasons the guards evacuated the camps were because they did not want the prisoners to be alive to tell their stories to Germany's enemies and they believed they needed prisoners to process weapons for them whenever they needed. If people were not able to keep up with the line, they were shot no matter what. - most marches occurred in the winter which made conditions harsh for the people to walk in.
- the term "death marsh" was made up by prisoners along the way walking in the march. it was not because of how long the walk was, but because of the way the German guards would treat them and kill them.
