The Opposite of Anger is Empathy by Victoria Gliga

Anger often stems from personal grievances and a lack of understanding. In contrast, empathy gratifies its relationship between anger because its direct opposite, takes scenarios into perspective, and it fosters connections.

"'I’d always get furious when I saw someone speeding down the highway…especially if they cut in front of me. A couple of years ago I had to take my 15-year-old son to the emergency room after he had accidentally cut himself. Ever since, when I see someone recklessly speeding, I tell myself ‘They must have a reason’."

In this quote, the speaker’s shift in perspective demonstrates how empathy can replace anger.

Initially, the speaker feels anger when witnessing reckless driving, especially when others cut in front of them. This is a typical emotional response driven by frustration and a sense of unfairness. However, after experiencing a personal crisis with their son, the speaker’s reaction changes. Instead of responding with anger, they remind themselves, "They must have a reason." This thought reflects empathy, as it shows the speaker is considering the driver’s situation rather than reacting impulsively. While we might not all experience the same situations, understanding that people’s actions can be influenced by different circumstances—whether cultural, personal, or economic—helps us see the shared humanity in these moments. This shift from anger to empathy exemplifies how empathy can counter anger by offering perspective, fostering connections, and regulating emotions.

The article argues that empathy counters anger by fostering understanding instead of judgment. Anger often arises from feeling misunderstood or threatened, while empathy encourages viewing situations from another's perspective. This shift from blame to understanding helps reduce conflict, increase compassion, and calm the emotional intensity of anger. Practicing empathy promotes deeper connections, fostering peace and reducing impulsive reactions triggered by anger. Empathy is developed from within while peace is a state of mind.

Empathy works as the opposite of anger, much like how opposites tend to balance or counter each other. Think of fire and water—fire represents anger, and water (empathy) can put out the fire. This visual supports the idea that empathy can calm and reduce anger.

The stimulus can make you angry. Adding "self-empathy" can decrease that anger. Adding "self-empathy" and "other empathy" can significantly decrease anger. Adding all of this can equal to peace. Adding the opposite of anger, which is empathy can you make more peaceful. With this, we can prove that the opposite of anger is empathy because empathy "heals" anger.

This article talks about how the concept of "color theory" works within someone's home. Subconsciously, due to frequent exposure, we associate colors with emotions. For example, joy/happiness is yellow, disgust is green, and anger is red. It has been proven with research that the color blue, in any soft shade, and white, is associated with calmness and serenity. On the other hand, red has been moreover associated with anger. This all comes to show how colors can manipulate our feelings of emotion, especially in places where anger and distress come to ease like doctors' offices, dentist's offices, and maternity wards. So, in all, the opposite of anger is calmness as seen with color theory and the emotions it inhibits.

A point to add is the exercise of yoga. Yoga is known for its calming properties and it works to counteract the emotion of anger through peace and serenity. The practice of yoga works to decompress the emotional build-up of anger and its subfactorial feelings like trauma, hurt, loss, and more. How we react to anger can affect those around us, but, we can reduce the risk of a deconstructive outburst of anger with peace to slow down the process of hurting. To put a halt to a powerful emotion, we must contradict it with another emotion that is the complete opposite, like calmness. For example, the yin-yang symbol is "a Chinese philosophical concept that describes two opposing but complementary forces".
