People can get Legionnaires’ disease when they breathe in small droplets of water in the air that contain the bacteria. People can get sick by aspiration of drinking water containing Legionella. This happens when water accidentally goes into the lungs while drinking. People at increased risk of aspiration include those with swallowing difficulties, but this is less common. Legionella can spread through shower heads, sink faucets, hot tubs, hot water tanks, hot heaters, and large plumbing complexes.

The patient will face symptoms that contain of coughing, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches. Symptoms usually take 2-14 days after being exposed to show but it could take longer. People who are facing severe symptoms or cases can be tested either by a chest x-ray or by a urine test which are the easiest, most efficient and pretty much the only ways of determining if the patient has Legionella. The patient will feel very sick, and extremely weak.

Legionnaires’ disease requires treatment with antibiotics and most cases of this illness can be treated successfully. Healthy people usually get better after being sick with Legionnaires’ disease, but they often need care in the hospital. Older people have a harder time fighting off the disease because their body is isn't as strong anymore compared to a younger and healthy person. If antibiotics don't work, people can face death or severe lung failure. Checking the patient's urine is also a efficient way of seeing if they have Legionella.

When taking an antibiotic for Legionella it lasts for about 1 to 3 weeks. About 1 out of 10 people who gets sick with Legionnaires’ disease will die due to complications from their illness. For those who get Legionnaires’ disease during a stay in a facility where they are watched and taken care of, about 1 out of every 4 people will die. So with that being said, yes, Legionnaire's disease is fatal and people can and will die from the disease.
