Freddie and Truus Oversteegen were girls who were recruited to assassinate Nazi soldiers and their Dutch collaborators during the 1930's in Europe. Their story isn't really a famous one, but their impact on the world sure is. Freddie and Truus began their work in their teenage years as innocent young girls who just wore pigtails.

Where It All Began

Freddie and Truus were only little children when a commander with the Haarlem Resistance Group visited their house. The commander came to ask their mother if he could recruit Freddie and Truus to help kill Nazis. The mother agreed and the girls began to work.

Hannie Schaft

In 1943, the girls joined forces with a woman named Hannie Schaft. Hannie dropped out of college because she refused to sign a pledge of loyalty to Germany. Together the girls formed a sabotage and an assassation cell.

Hannie's Death

About three years later, Hannie was executed by a Nazi soldier. Her last words were "I'm a better shot" after supposedly only being wounded by her executioner. After Hannie's death, the girls were extremely devastated and were traumatized until their last breath.

The girls had to learn how to sabotage roads and bridges, as well as railroad lines. They also had to learn how to shoot a gun, but once they finally got the hang of it, it became almost their second nature.

The girls sometimes flirted with the Nazi soldiers, only to trap them and end up killing them. They also did drive-by shootings on bikes. The girls finally figured out what their goal was, and made it fun while they did it.

The Impact

Both Freddie and Truus had a huge impact on the world with their resistance. This act of resistance showed how much the sisters cared for their country. In 2014, the girls were recognized for their acts of service.

Both women died at the age of 92. Truus died in 2016, while Freddie died in 2018; exactly one day before her 93rd birthday. These women both fought for justice for the Jews and the Poles until their dying day.
