The Home Front during WW1 In Britain itself during the war The Home Front saw a massive change in role of women, rationing, and bombings in parts of Britain by Germans. This enthusiasm did not last. After the Battle of the Marne, it became obvious that there would be not quick victory and as trench warfare took its hold, the true reality of a modern war became obvious to all. War-weariness set in. The government could not hide the fact that many thousands of men had been killed or severely wounded. The return of wounded soldiers to London rail stations late at night did nothing to detract from the knowledge that casualties were horrendous. The Germans also attacked Britain for the first time, civilians themselves were targeted with bombing raids by zeppelins and coastal raids by the German Navy. he first Zeppelin raid on London was at midnight on May 31st 1915, when Hauptmann Linnarz bombed the capital killing seven people and making 18,000 worth of damage. On December 16th, 1914, the east coast towns of Scarborough, Whitby and Hartlepool were attacked by the German Navy killing 119 people including children.

Source-
http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/world-war-one/the-home-front-1914-to-1918/

(this is a video explaining in more detail)

Submarine Warfare - Alec Smith

Submarine warfare in World War I was primarily a fight between German and Austro-Hungarian U-boats and Atlantic supply convoys bound for the United Kingdom, France, and Russia. Submarines used advanced weaponry to attack other submarines, ships, or land targets They use reconnaissance and landing of special forces as well. All participants were supposed to abide by the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907. The Germans did not comply to the rules so they switched to unrestricted submarines, which followed the british introduction of Q-ships. The German were later on forced to stop for a while due to American diplomatic pressure. But in January 1917, Germany declared a war zone around the British Isles and sank up to a quarter of shipping entering it. Then cruisers were invented. The U-9 rose to power when it sank 3 British cruisers in under an hour. Later on, German submarines were used to lay mines and to attack iron ore shipping in the Baltic. During the war, the British attempted to develop a submarine that could operate with a battleship fleet, but in wasn't successful because it couldn't operate effectively. Submarines played a huge role in WWl.

Sources: http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/germany-resumes-unrestricted-submarine-warfare and http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/11/6/1253332/-World-War-One-The-Birth-of-Submarine-Warfare

World War I, or also known as the Great War, was a worldwide war that started in Europe after Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, who was an ethnic Serbian, who believed that the Archduke was a tyrant. This ignited a flame under Austria-Hungary so they declared war against Serbia and eventually, other countries joined in and the war became a worldwide affair.
Many new technologies and weapons were introduced in this war, like machine guns, artillery, poison gas, submarines, tanks, and airplanes. These weapons were better suited as defensive weapons, so a type of fighting called "Trench Warfare" was created. This was when the two sides of the battle would dig trenches and make use of their defensive weapons, causing many casualties during the war.
Most Americans wanted to stay neutral in the war, but Germany invaded Belgium, which upset the U.S. The U.S entered the war for 4 reasons: Britain Blockades Germany (hurt our trade) Sinking of the Lusitania (U boats sink ship, killing U.S citizens) Unrestricted Submarine Warfare (Germany sinking civilian ships) Zimmerman Note (Germany promising Mexico land if they attacked the U.S) After the U.S entered the war, it was basically over. The U.S was the turning point of the war that they eventually won.
Interesting Facts:
- Most deaths were caused by disease and infections, not warfare.
- Tanks had genders (male - cannons) (female - machine guns)
- Some explosions in France were heard in London.
- Americans became "anti German" and renamed and outlawed many things.
- Both Native Americans and African Americans served in the war.
- A boy named Sidney Lewis joined the war at age 12.
