Into the Wild

Into the Wild represents the American Dream because everyone thought Chris McCandless and his family were the perfect family and had the life every citizen wanted to live. He was raised with more money than most people had but he also got to experience poverty by visiting the poor in the slums of Washington D.C. He had a different mindset about money and everything he had. Chris had left his old life by donating all of his life's saving and not telling anyone, including his family, about his plans for the future. His parents worked day and night in order to make enough money to drive their nice cars and live in their big house, but Chris saw more potential for the life he was living. “I now walk into the wild.” (Krakauer). The American Dream is wanting less material goods in order to live a more fulfilling life that is indulged in the natural beauty of the world that Chris McCandless was seeking.

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby resembles the American dream when Jay Gatsby overcomes his poor decisions in the past to gain an incredible amount of money. He throws parties every weekend and has a huge house. Everyone thought his house was the place to be. He tried so hard to get the girl of his dreams to come to one of his parties but never did. She lived across from him with a green light at the end of her dock. He would always look at the green light at the end of the night. The green light symbolizes Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for a life with Daisy. "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter – to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther...and one fine morning– " (Fitzgerald 149). Even though the green light resembles Daisy, he uses the American Dream to make her come back to him. The best thing he could have done is self improvement and that's what he did to win her back.

The Declaration of Independence

“All Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among there are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” This principle has inspired millions to come to America in hope for a better future for themselves and their ancestors. People have always looked to America as a land in which to succeed in. An example of this would be the freedom of speech. Many people couldn't say whatever they wanted. It could've been racist and people would've been kicked out of places or maybe even arrested. Things back then are very different from how they are now. The American Dream could not be the way it is now without the principle of freedom. "For men came across the sea not merely to find new soil for their plows but to win freedom." Everyone works very hard to do the things they want to do.

The National Anthem

The National Anthem is basically the definition of the American Dream. In the last line of the National Anthem, it says, “For the land of the free, and the home of the brave.” There were soldiers fighting for our country then and soldiers fighting for our country now. We don’t always appreciate our soldiers for what they have sacrificed for us. They sacrificed their lives and families. The National Anthem is a song they play at every sports event before the game/ match/ or meet starts. We stand together as a proud American as we sing the National Anthem. We are very proud and cannot believe how many people have sacrificed their lives for us. Thank you.

Self-Reliance is when you rely on one's own powers and resources rather than those of others. I think this quote resembles the American Dream because the principles bring you peace and happiness. "Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles.” (Emerson) You use your self power to achieve your life goals.

Party in the U.S.A. by Miley Cyrus

I thought this song would be a good representation of the American dream because she sings "with a dream" when she arrives in LA. People can relate to this when they enter America. They are full of excitement yet they are anxious how everyone takes an effect on them. People come here looking for new and better opportunities either for a job or just living the right way. In the song Miley sings, "Got my hands up, they're playing' my song and now I'm gonna be okay. Yeah! It's a party in the USA! Yeah! It's a party in the USA!" She talks about people playing "her song" which can be an analogy for the American Dream. It's almost like she hears it and she's reminded of why she is here in the first place.
