Throughout "Fences" Troy falls in love with another woman---Alberta-- and impregnates her. Rose, his wife of many years raises the child, but refuses to acknowledge her husband after the betrayal of his affair. Cory, his son, is kicked out of the house after rebelling against his father to continue with his one true passion--football. It is shown to negatively effect the character's past, present, and most likely their futures. It seems to hold them back from the potential they each think should have been theirs.
-Trust: Throughout the play, trust seems to hang over all the characters heads. Troy does not trust white people. Cory doesn't trust his dad's judgement. After the affair, Rose doesn't trust Troy. It seems to be something that all the characters must accept and overcome in order to resolve the issues of the play.
- Redemption: Throughout the play, each character fights to better themselves. Troy specifically lived a hard life growing up but is determined to leave the world in a better place than where he started at.
