Troy, our idealistic protagonist has lived a life full of let-downs, mistakes, and regrets. Yet, through it all he has managed a comfortable life surrounded by his loving wife Rose, brother Gabriel, sons Cory and Lyons, and best friend Bono . Throughout "Fences" Troy falls in love with another woman---Alberta-- and impregnates her. Rose, his wife of many years raises the child, but refuses to acknowledge her husband after the betrayal of his affair. Cory, his son, is kicked out of the house after rebelling against his father to continue with his one true passion--football. Troy makes mistakes right and left and yet, in the end, when he is dead and gone, his children, wife, brother, and friends gather around with a mutual love and respect for the man they lost.

- Racism: Throughout the play "Fences," racism is portrayed as a daunting evil that rests over all the characters. It is shown to negatively effect the character's past, present, and most likely their futures. It seems to hold them back from the potential they each think should have been theirs.
-Trust: Throughout the play, trust seems to hang over all the characters heads. Troy does not trust white people. Cory doesn't trust his dad's judgement. After the affair, Rose doesn't trust Troy. It seems to be something that all the characters must accept and overcome in order to resolve the issues of the play.
- Redemption: Throughout the play, each character fights to better themselves. Troy specifically lived a hard life growing up but is determined to leave the world in a better place than where he started at. Rose, after finding out about the affair stops living for Troy's happiness and starts living for her own.

Troy, I ain't gonna forgive you for what you did to me, but what I will say is that I loved you for the man you were, for the man I let you be. Even though you dead in the ground, ain't nothin' gonna change the fact that I respect your life and what you achieved. Cory is lookin' more and more like you each and every day. I wish you could see the man he's become. He woulda done you proud. You was a good man, and you coulda been a great husband had you remained faithful to me. I hope St. Peter let you in just like Gabriel said, you deserve that type of peace.
