There are many types of carbohydrates. The main carbohydrates found in our food are in the form of starch and sugars. We can easily test if a food item contains starch.  
  1. Take small quantity of the food items to be tested.
  2. Put 2-3 drops of iodine solution on it.
  3. Observe the colour of the food item.
  4. Blue-black colour indicates the presence of starch in the tested food item.

Test of Protein:
To test protein in food we need solution of copper sulphate and (Sodium Hydroxide) caustic soda.
Grind the food sample finely (for example: almonds). 
Put it in clean test tube and add 10 drops of water.
Using a dropper add 2 drops of copper sulphate solution. 
Shake it well.T
hen add 10 drops of caustic soda solution. 
Shake it well.
Violet color indicates the presence of proteins.

Test for Fat

  • Take a small quantity of the food to be tested.
  • Wrap the food in a small piece of paper and crush it.
  • Straighten the paper and dry it by keeping it open to the sunlight for a while.
  • You will observe an oily patch on the paper that indicates the presence of fat in the food.

If the food is solid (e.g., banana, apple, potato chips),  crush a small amount and add enough water to cover the bottom of the tube. 3. Add 10 drops of Benedict’s Solution to each test tube. 4. Place the test tubes in the hot water bath and note your observation. 
 The Benedict’s Solution provides a test for the presence of simple sugars.
