Just before midnight on 10 July 1985, two explosions rocked the harbour, sinking the 40-metre Rainbow Warrior. Underwater explosives had been placed by french secret service agents on the hull, blowing two holes in the ship.

The Rainbow Warrior sank almost immediately .

At the time, France and New Zealand were allies, so this attack came as even more of a shock to New Zealand.
