The perspective of men and women in the story were portrayed the same way by society. Men had to be presented strictly masculine while women had to play the roles of being strictly feminine. Especially Fermin , he strives to play the dominant role. During the time period, it is reflected that gender roles were a big issue in the mid 20th century.

Regarding Gender roles, the idea of women being weaker within this society goes hand in hand with the argument of the fact that they never went out THEIR way to do something, but Men dominating women was already imbedded into their mindset from all stages in their life. Starting from the beginning of their childhood into their “adult” life of having a husband. Although Bea was one of the few women who actually went out of their way to make something of their lives, this was not a norm she was ONE of the FEW to do anything out of the ordinary.

I felt it was very irritating the way that Daniel (since the book was told through his perspective) physically critiqued every woman that he met. I felt that there was a lot of emphasis on how good looking a woman was and whether she still "had it", versus primarily paying attention to the persona of the woman. I wonder how that reflects the way that the author himself views women. Was this an artistic choice or an illumination of lack of control.

That is true but also it is a natural process that children split from their parents because otherwise, it would be more difficult to leave the nest. In certain cultures families are tight knit but in others, especially in Europe, once you are considered capable of taking care of yourself, you need to leave and start your own life. It only makes sense if you get caught up in your lifes curiosities rather than continuing to build a relationship with your father.

It is interesting how the higher class percentage of the population are more associated with atheism, and it makes you wonder whether it has something to do with guilt of corruption; the billionare circles are suspected and often caught up in corrupt tendencies and even the most horrid of crimes. As in, are they afraid of being sent to helk for their actions? So they do not accept it? Couldnt it go both ways; they repent? This also goes into the observation that many finally embrace a religion on their death bed.

I do not think so. The “Guilt of corruption” would eventually result in constant repentance. I am not inferring that people with money do not have holes in their life, but the idea of worrisome and the idea of living by a thread financially, is not prevalent. There is NO NEED to be begging to a higher power for an object or in some cases a feeling. The environment that you/we’re in conditioned us to believing after achieving money, you have won.

(1)The further along we get into the book, we see Daniel straying from his father as he continues deeper into the mystery of Julián. While Daniel gets older, both being intertwined with Carax’s life and getting older allow him to further separate from his father. This can be seen as natural because often children abandon their close relationship with their parents once the grow older, but it can be analyzed one step further. Daniel is constantly in search of something that is hard to attain. Examples of this are in his love life, such as his pursuit of Clara, but also in his constant search to uncover the mystery of Carax, where he is frequently running into obstacles hunting for information. When he has good and seemingly constant people in his life like his father, he doesn't appear to be grateful for them because he is looking towards the future and his desire for what he wants it to be.

(2)Going off of this, Daniel’s father is constantly providing for Daniel and being kind to him despite his son treating him as less than. He even goes above and beyond by gifting the extravagant pen Daniel had his eye on. This is interesting because this display of kindness and unconditional love is quite different when compared to the other father/husband figures in the novel. We unfortunately see an enormous amount of domestic abuse and violence in general, even towards the main character (when Daniel is beat up by Clara’s music instructor). Julián’s father abused his wife, which is one difference between Carax and Daniel, despite the many parallels we see between the characters’ lives.

While discussing the complexity of the characters, the reader’s opinion of Daniel fluctuates thought the novel. In the very beginning, Daniel is a lovable young boy who has a curious nature and someone who the reader feels pity for because of the loss of his mother. Despite this, as Daniel grows older, he becomes less likable in the reader’s eyes, first when Clara comes into the scene. He grows much more possessive and jealous, making most reader’s dislike him in this section of the novel. The author offers true complexity to the characters, not being afraid to make eve the main character have major faults.
