Upon completion of my degree of a master’s in education in Guidance and Counseling, I plan to become a guidance counselor at the High school level. I would prefer to work at a high school level because I am familiar with the age group; I’ve been a High school teacher for the past 4 years and have worked closely with students, administration and parents.

Exploration option 1- Top 5 according to a School Counselor.

I talked with one of the Guidance Counselors at the high school I work at and we discussed the top 5 current legal and ethical issues affecting their job.

1# personal life vs professional
Social media is a huge problem for counselors because they use it to communicate with friends and family but sometimes students find them in their families pages and it may lead to awkward knowledge of each others lives. Should professionals have social media? Yes of course but we must be extremely careful with who we friend and maintain everything private.

#2 Extra Roles not for counselors.
Sometimes administrators give administrative duties to counselors and these feel obliged to take them on even when it interferes with their actual duties and schedules.

#3 Professional distance
Because some of the students have worked with Mr. Guajardo since before he was at the high school, (he use to be a middle school science teacher) some students are very close to him and see him as a friend, which he says sometimes can get in the way of his job specially when a request can't be met and students feel like he should help them and take it personally.

#4 Confidentiality
Because he knows some of the students personally sometimes confidentiality becomes a small issue. He said some of his friends ask him to speak to their kids and then tell them what is going on in their life which he says he never does but those conversations have came up.

#5 Dual Relationships, the #5 ethical issue that affects Mr. Guajardo's job is dual relationships. Mr. Guajardo, said that since the school is located in a town where he grew up most of his students are the children of his ex-classmates and friends thus he has personal relationships with some of the families of his students. He said it doesn't really create problems but sometimes because they know him personally the students families expect special treatment for their children when it comes to scheduling.

The ASCA website offers vast information for counselors, from legal and ethical to faq's. This website is a very important and informative source for school counselors. The ASCA's mission is to The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) supports school counselors' efforts to help students focus on academic, career and social/emotional development so they achieve success in school and are prepared to lead fulfilling lives as responsible members of society. ASCA provides professional development, publications and other resources, research and advocacy to school counselors around the globe.
In my review of the American School Counselor Association, I noticed that one of the most extensive topics for ethical issues is Confidentiality. This topic provides both requirements and limitations for school counselors.

Another topic addressed on the legal and ethical page is Dual Relationships. I found this topic interesting because it was one of the 5 main concerns that the counselor I spoke to mentioned. This ethical issue happens when the counselor knows the student they are working with personally or knows the family of the student personally this creating a dual relationship that might present the counselor with ethical issues in the future.

Reference
(n.d.).

The ACA websites mission is to promote the professional development of counselors, advocate for the profession, and ensure ethical, culturally-inclusive practices that protect those using counseling services.

A topic addressed in the ethical section of the ACA is personal virtual relationships with current clients. This states that counselors are prohibited of having virtual relationships with their current clients. I found this one interested because it was one of the top 5 issues addressed during my interview with the school counselor.

Another topic addressed on the ACA website is Multiple clients.

This is when a counselor agrees to provide counseling services to two or more persons who have a relationship. this was interesting because as school counselors we might find ourselves working with siblings or family members.

References
(n.d.). Sometimes counselors are asked by admins or school personal about some student information an without meaning tonight be breaching the confidentiality laws.

Both articles provide information about confidentiality. One provides the guidelines for school counselors and the laws they must follow to keep the students confidentiality. While the other talks about ethical dilemmas counselors have faced regarding confidentiality issues. This article provided scenarios in which the counselors were put in a position by either administrators or family members where answering their inquiries about the students as innocent as they may seem breach confidentiality between counselor and students.
From these articles I learned the importance of maintaining confidentiality and what to do when it is breached. As well as how to prevent being in situations in which breaching confidentiality might arise.
