"The morning road air was like a new dress"(32)

Janie is saying that feeling the fresh air on her skin causes the same emotions as a fresh new piece of clothing. Getting new clothing like a dress is exciting. It can even be an event depending on the context. A new dress can also be a point of pride and can instill the wearer with confidence. Confidence is a perfect way to describe how Janie feels at this point in the story where the quote was taken from. After leaving an emotionally abusive husband, and moving into a whole new chapter of her life with a new husband that will give her a better life. She also feels free, unbound by connections to anyone or anything. Like the wishes of her grandmother or her ties to her husband. She feels liberated.

"She sent her face to Joe's funeral and herself went rollicking with the springtime across the world."(88)

Janie is saying that she physically went to the funeral but on the inside, she was dreaming of the new life that was now available to her because of Joe dying. Rollicking is an inherently jovial word, that conjures up happy and care-free images in your brain, which juxtaposes a funeral, which has the opposite effect. Springtime is a recurring theme, and it shows up when Janie is feeling optimistic and hopeful about life. The fact that springtime appears here shows that Janie is looking forward to her new life without having to be in the constant shadow of Jody. Jody abused Janie both mentally and physically and tried to control almost every aspect of her life in the years leading up to his death. In the eyes of Janie that practically eliminated all goodwill that she had towards him. So Janie is saying that while she was physically present and attending his funeral, mentally she was planning a new and better life for herself.

"He (Joe) had a bow-down command in his face and every step he took made the thing more tangible."(47, hyperbole)

Joe is being described as an inspiring, natural leader that has the ability to arouse confidence in the people around him. Before he arrived, the town barely fit the requirements to be a town. But when Joe shows up with his contagious work ethic and his money it seems as if the change happens overnight. Not only does the quote show how Joe is integral to the town's society, but it also shows how important he is to Janie. Bow-down as it's said in the quote is a good use when talking about Jodie. He almost expects to be worshiped by the people of the town, and especially by Janie. When Janie exposes him in the store, it removes his command, his unrivaled authority, and his almost mystical status. This quote is describing the power that Joe wields, and Janie is the person that takes that all away.
