Causes 
  • Smoking tobacco is the leading cause of lung cancer 
  • About 80% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking, and many others are caused by exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Lung cancer in people who don't smoke can be caused by exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, air pollution, or other factors. Workplace exposures to asbestos, diesel exhaust 
  • Lung cancer starts when abnormal cells grow out of control in the lung. They can invade nearby tissues and form tumors. Lung cancer can start anywhere in the lungs and affect any part of the respiratory system.

Symptoms
  • Coughing that gets worse or doesn’t go away. 
  • Chest pain. 
  • Shortness of breath. 
  • Wheezing. 
  • Coughing up blood. 
  • Feeling very tired all the time. 
  • Weight loss with no known cause. 

Treatment 
  • Surgery - An operation where doctors cut out cancer tissue. 
  • Chemotherapy - Using special medicines to shrink or kill cancer. The drugs can be pills you take or medicines given in your veins, or sometimes both. 
  • Radiation therapy - Using high-energy rays (similar to X-rays) to kill the cancer. 
  • Targeted therapy - Using drugs to block the growth and spread of cancer cells. The drugs can be pills you take or medicines given in your veins. You will get tests to see if targeted therapy is right for your cancer type before this treatment is used.

it infects cells along airways attaching to ACE 2 and other molecules. It uses it as a door to get into the cells and make copies of itself.
Consequences 
  • inflammation - damages the lungs air sacs causing them to scare, stiffen or fill with fluid, blocking some oxygen from passing from lungs into blood stream 
  • shortness of breath from falling blood oxygen levels 
  • inflammation can go awry- important because inflammation helps our bodes fight infection but the ACE receptors are what causes inflammation so when to virus attaches to it inflammation can't happen. 
Symptoms
Most common symptoms:
fever
  • cough
  • tiredness
  • loss of taste or smell
Less common symptoms
  • sore throat
  • headache
  • aches and pains
    diarrhoea
  • a rash on skin, or discolouration of fingers or toes
  • red or irritated eyes
Serious symptoms:
  • difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • loss of speech or mobility, or confusion
    chest pain
Treatment 
- vaccine to reduce chance of getting the virus
- mild illness and can recover at home without medical care. 
- serious illness: ventilation to increase intake of oxygen  
- Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that can help reduce the length of time on a ventilator and save lives of patients with severe and critical illness.

Emphysema is a disorder that affects the alveoli air sacs in the lungs. The air sacs in the alveoli become larger and inflated, causing them to become thinner and weaker… making them more susceptible to rupturing. This creates larger air spaces in the lungs instead of many small ones, reducing the surface area of the lungs available for gas exchange. This makes it difficult for an individual with this condition to breathe. Breathing less will reduce the amount of oxygen reaching the bloodstream. It will also prevent old air from getting out, trapping it leaving no room in the alveoli for new, clean air. This will then not only impact the lungs directly but impact the heart system and any other organ that requires oxygen and blood.

Causes:
  • Breathing in any kind of polluted air *chemical fumes or dust from ex. cotton
  • Smoking *ex. tobacco and marijuana
  • A deficiency in the alpha-1 antitrypsin protein
  • Age - between 40 and 60

Consequences:
  • develop a collapsed lung 
  • heart problems from the increase in pressure in arteries connecting the heart and lungs
  • shortness of breath from breathing less

Symptoms:
  • shortness of breath 
  • wheezing 
  • "smokers cough"
  • ongoing fatigue 
  • inability to stay mentally alert
  • lips and fingers turning blue 

Treatment:
  • Medications: Bronchodilators, relaxes constricted airways, relieving coughing, shortness of breath and breathing problems... Inhaled steroids because it reduces inflammation... Antibiotics. 
  • Therapy: Pulmonary rehabilitation can teach the individual breathing exercises and techniques that may help reduce breathlessness and improve your ability to exercise ... use supplemental oxygen
  • Adjust lifestyle: try a new healthier diet ... avoid smoking ... avoid chemical fumes and dust particles
  • Surgery *extreme cases: lung volume reduction, removing the sections of damaged tissue ... lung transplant
