It seemed like it was really important to Greece to have Spyridon Louis from Greece win the marathon, so I thought that was interesting. The marathon began in Greece, a story dating back to the battles against the Persians where Pheidippides ran to announce the defeat of the Persians.

Many of these countries were industrial ("first-world") countries that could afford to send/have athletes. Also, because communication and travel were not very good at the time, it would have been impossible for some countries to get their athletes to Greece. Russia did not participate likely because they were on the verge of a civil war.

Nationalism rose during the nineteenth century and by 1896, many countries incited pride and even superiority among their citizens. I would have been proud to be an American Gold Medalist in the very first Olympics to represent my country as the best.

The Olympics brought a lot of countries together to collaborate. Members of the IOC served to host an event beneficial for all countries involved. This is the first (known) collaboration of such a scale among countries spanning almost every continent (now, all of them). As much as this is an athletic event, it is also a political and cultural one.
