Grant Baker

Mrs. Scherer

ENG-4U

2018/12/13

Lion: Looking Through Windows and Mirrors

At 4 years old being lost in a massive city in India not knowing where your home is how long would you be able to survive? In the book Lion by Saroo Brierley he tells us his life story about how he was able to survive his childhood and teenage life without knowing where he is from and how he was able to find his home. This book can be looked through a Marxist lens because of the power Saroo has throughout the early years of his life.

Looking through a Marxist lens Saroo at an early age was bossed around and looked over by his older brothers. Anything he did was with his older brothers because he did not have many friends and his mother did not want him getting lost in the city, they lived in. Saroo lacks a lot of power in his town because of his age, he was not mature enough to be able to have free realm. Saroo following his brothers really did affect him because he ended up getting lost when his brother too him to work. The power Saroo had very well caused the problem that he had gotten into.

Looking through the Marxist lens after Saroo got lost by getting on a train that he thought was taking him home he ended up in one of the most populated cities in India called Calcutta. Saroo had no power because he did not know where he was or what he was supposed to do. He was desperate in the city and had to take any opportunity for shelter or food if it came to him After finding a home for children in the city Saroo was safe and able to start thinking about his future and where he was going since they had found him a home.

Looking through the Marxist lens Saroo started to have more money and power after he moved to Australia with his new parents. He was able to find a job and since he was getting older, he parents gave him more leeway to do what he wanted. This power really helped Saroo find his home. He was able to find a girlfriend who cared about the situation he cared about and together they found his home. After years of searching he was able to find it and his parents encouraged his search.

Finding his home was like getting the monkey off his back and it relieved him and really helped him become who he was because of the closure he had in his life As Saroo got older the power started to come to hm after he was able to find his way through Calcutta and survive by himself at the age of four

Works Cited

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saroo_Brierley

https://fridaymagazine.ae/life-culture/people-profiles/saroo-brierley-on-his-life-journey-that-inspired-lion-1.2264856
