Tech helped massively - everything only came out because of social media. Hard to separate this instance of activism from social media.

The hashtags helped everyone "do their part" because even the bare minimum helped amplify the message.

Difficult to take global movement and localise it - what's the mission statement? what's the cause and struggle? Those may not fully translate to our demographic. Malaysia's #MeToo may have different problems and narratives that may not fit neatly into the imported tools given to us by #MeToo

Diverse narratives get lost — Telegram group, primarily made up of Indian men, but where are the other groups? Whose narratives HAVEN'T surfaced?

None of us connected Telegram to MeToo - although the issues CAN HAVE some connection to MeToo, it feels distinct

Types of sexual assault in MeToo - physical, inappropriate touching etc. - didn't connect to Telegram because it's a different kind of assault and crime (sharing of nonconsensual images).

MeToo wasn't intended to be exclusively for a specific demo, but since it was started by a specific woman from a specific group, it left out other narratives - male victims?  
Locally - there were a few men who stepped forward, but there may be many more.

Better understanding of right and wrong. 

Maybe this thing has happened, but it feels like it's left in the past. Something like this could happen again? There could be other groups that this could be happening to who don't know how to get help.

In America, a lot of women were sharing their #MeToo stories, there were a bunch of men who completely misrepresented the movement - "men can't do anything anymore". 

Last year, celeb preacher - victims shared experiences - but a lot of people (mostly men) said that the victims were "hopping on the bandwagon" or that it was a "trend"

MeToo US vs Malaysia - maruah, save face culture needs more tools. Many in Malaysia also aren't privileged enough to access the tools/knowledge.

People are coming forward more, feeling comfortable. But a lot of responses where people say "it's just a trend". Need more awareness. 

Perception amongst some, particularly in mens groups, that MeToo is used as a "weapon" against men. 

More information was circulated post MeToo - what exactly is sexual assault, what to do, how to get help. Awareness raised that could help people in real life. More support. Different ways of approaching situations.

Definitely a lot of upsides and has left positive impacts. 

Downsides are not necessarily "harm" but the movement also triggered a reactionary movement from certain other groups, e.g. "Men's Rights Activists" 

MeToo did make it a global conversation - not a perfect translation but it DID make it to countries like ours. Started conversations everywhere, because of the reach of social media. Womens' groups in the past were more localised/geographically limited. Internet helped to reach out to larger groups of people. 

English speaking, urban - these are privileges that many don't have access to. Locks a lot of people out of the conversation. How inclusive was it in Malaysia? Getting better, but a long way to go. These things have been known for a long time but a lot of people still don't know a lot of this because of where they're from.
