As we have seen throughout the course of this term culture plays a major role in what is condemned and what is accepted within a society. American culture has always accepted and promoted drug use in moderation, and applauded those who can function, but condemn those who become "addicted". The Recognizing Addiction as a Disease Act of 2007 was a huge milestone for my community because it clarified that Addiction is not just a moral shortcoming, but a chronic relapsing brain disease. I think this recognition helped to not only give society a better understanding, but also addicts themselves.

In our textbook education is described as an institution where members of society go to be taught academic knowledge, learning skills, and cultural norms.

In the face of the Fentanyl crisis educational institutions are at the forefront of combating this crisis, as it's continuing to affect adolescents, and are beginning to implement harm reduction practices. Educational seminars on the effects of opioids are being held, and are all around just becoming more aware of the issue and speaking out against it.

What does this mean for my community? This means that we are less alone in fighting the crisis. Not only that, but we can take our own experiences and share them with these institutions and peers struggling with addiction.

"The New Recovery Advocacy Movement (NRAM) began in the late 1990s as a response to increased criminialization, demedicalization, and restigmatization of drug and alcohol problems. The movement also sought to address cultural pessimism about the possibility of long-term addiction recovery".

Since this movement has begun there has been a network of treatment and recovery support systems implemented around the world. Not only that but celebration, and advocacy events for those in recovery each year demonstrate that people are no longer ashamed to be in recovery, but proud.

The economy plays both a negative and positive role when it comes to social change within my community.

The loss of a job, lack of money, losing a home, etc. - are all reasons people find themselves relapsing over or avoiding seeking help over. With this we watch those struggling with addiction or losing their lives to it and that affects our community emotionally.

On a more positive note, funding on local, state, and national levels are what help our community thrive. We are able to enact more social change in the ways of being able to bring more people together through events, establishments to hold meetings, etc.

The premise of religion and letting something bigger than yourself guide and take from you what you can not shoulder are guiding principles of my community.
