Every chapter and page we are able to learn something new from or about Stargirl. In the text it said "What she read were the parts that most people ignored, the parts without headline and pictures, the boondocks of the paper: the hospital admissions, the death notices , the birthday and wedding announcements, the police blotter, the coming events calendar"(Spinelli 112). This was a very important part about learning who Stargirl really was in my opinion. Everyone always wondered how she knew so much about people. Like their birthdays or other important things going on in their lives. In this quote it shows how exactly she finds that out, by reading the "boring" or "unnecessary" parts of the newspaper. This really shows how much she cares about anyone and everyone. It also shows how she takes time out of her day to make sure someone is not alone and had someone sing to them on their birthday, or have someone to rely on if they are going through anything in their life. She went by the name Stargirl for example, but now she goes by her birth name Susan. She also used to have her sunflower canvas bag. But now she does not. She wears makeup and does so many things to fit in with the crowd just like Leo wanted her to do. She also took off her favorite topping on pizza because Leo said it was not a "Normal" thing. This breaks my heart but I know Stargirl loves Leo so she will do this for him. This chapter really shows how people will change to fit into the "normal" and it really represents the changing of identity's and how people will give up their favorite styles, toys, friends, and so much more just to "fit in" and "Be like everyone else". They go to the mall, go on walks and even go out for pizza. Leo understands the Stargirl is a benevolent person, but she still stands out from the crowd and that's what he loves about her, but he is surprised to see she is kind of normal. Leo stated, "The house itself could have been anyones. Glossy bentwood furniture, throw rugs over hardwood floors...The same with her room. Except for Cinnamon's blue and yellow plywood apartment in the corner, it might have belonged to any high school girl" (Spinelli 119). Stargirl benefits Leo and allows him to see the world from a different perspective, but he is utterly confused about how she is able to look so normal despite her personality. To him her beneficence to others is odd, but to her they are normal. Leo may not realize it, but on the outside, everyone is the same. We all are human, but some of us like Stargirl understand the world to a higher extent than others do. Leo loves how different Stargirl is, and he loves the way she dresses, talks, and acts. But he does not love that other people don't like Stargirl and he gets shunned for dating her. So to try and stop others from not talking to him he tries to change Stargirl. He succeeds and Stargirl turns into a normal teenager. But Leo does not like that she is the same as everyone else, but he likes that he is no longer getting shunned for being with Stargirl. Stargirl changes her appearance and that seems to make people like her more, but her personality can never be changed so she still acts like herself. Leo wants people to see Stargirl as Leo sees and admires her. But Doing the things Stargirl does makes her "different" and that is why people don't like her. But she cannot change the way she acts so people will always not like her for that. Most people don't like change and are afraid of what change will do, and when Stargirl came to school she changed everything. On page 139 Stargirl changes everything about her just so she can't fit in for Leo. When she tells her that she needs to be more like everyone and for it because that's how the world works, she does that because she doesn't want Leo to get shunned just because of her. Leo and Stargirl are getting closer and closer as the book goes on, when Leo first visits her house he says that "it could have been anyone's ; with the Glossy bentwood furniture, throw rugs over hardwood floor."He begins to unravel that Stargirl is just like all of us, except she puts it differently.  When Stargirl is telling Leo how she reads the "boring" or "ignored" parts of the newspapers, it reveals that she sees things most people don't, or tend to ignore just because they don't matter, but for Stargirl everything matters mostly the unacknowledged parts. He wants to have the best of both worlds friends and Stargirl but understands that he cannot have both. Instead of changing the way others look at Stargirl, he decided to change her instead. Leo stated, "You should try to be more like the rest of us...Because nobody likes you" (Spinelli 138). His words broke Stargirl she became just like everyone else. Usually, she did not care about what others thought, but because the words came from Leo she did care. She changed herself completely and became self-conscious about herself. She became so caught up in wanting to be liked by others that she became boastful and forgot about the people who truly care for her. Leo's plan is not only backfired on himself but for Stargirl as well. He tried to change her for the better, but only made everything worse. Stargirl is not meant to be different. She isn't meant to stand out.
