How is coal obtained and what are the environmental impacts?

Coal is found underground, in seams. A seam is a layer containing coal thick enough to be profitably mined. It can be obtained by surface mining (including strip mining), removing the soil and rock above the coal seam to be removed from the surface. In addition, the use of underground mining involves digging shafts deep into the earth to access seams further beneath the earth.

Strip mining eliminates existing vegetation, displacing and destroying wildlife and habitat as a result of the construction of haul roads, stockpiling of topsoil, and the hauling of soil and coal. This increases the quantity of dust around mining operations. Dust degrades air quality and detrimentally impacts the health of mine workers. At times, tops are removed from mountains or hills. The soil and rock removed is deposited in nearby valleys, hollows and depressions, resulting in blocked, contaminated waterways containing poisonous substances such as arsenic and mercury. Some of these waterways are used by people for fishing and transport, thus this pollution also impacts their way of life.
