The 4 Key Principles in Islam

Islam encourages us to build strong and harmonious relationships with others through these four principles:

1) Ta’aruf (Knowing Each Other)
This means getting to know one another regardless of race, religion, or background. Allah says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13):
"O mankind! We created you from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Verily, the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware."

2) Tafahum (Understanding Each Other)
This refers to mutual understanding. It involves showing empathy in different situations and respecting the views of others to create harmony in ourselves and our community.

3) Ta’awun (Helping Each Other)
Helping and cooperating with one another for good causes is essential in Islam. Allah commands this in Surah Al-Maidah (5:2):
"And help one another in righteousness and piety."

4) Takaful (Ensuring Each Other’s Rights)
This principle focuses on ensuring social justice by supporting those in need. Examples include giving charity, donations, or paying zakat. It reflects the importance of mutual care and responsibility within the community.

By practicing these principles, we create a society rooted in peace, justice, and mutual respect, as guided by Islam.

WEEK 2: REASONS AND SOURCES OF HIKMAH FROM IBADAH

The Four Acts of Worship in Islam

Allah tells us that He created humans and jinn to worship Him. Here are the four main acts of worship we must understand and practice:

1) Salah (Prayer)
Allah commands us to pray with sincerity. This verse reminds us:
"Whoever hopes for the meeting with Allah, know that the appointed time is coming. And He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing." (Quran 29:5)

Through prayer, we connect with Allah and balance our feelings—fearing His displeasure and avoiding arrogance or disobedience.

2) Sawm (Fasting)
Fasting teaches patience, empathy, and self-discipline. Allah says:
"We will test you with fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives, and fruits. But give glad tidings to the patient." (Quran 2:155)

Fasting helps us feel the struggles of others, trains us to follow Allah's commands, and strengthens our willpower. It also brings us closer to Allah during challenging times.

3) Zakat (Charity)
Giving zakat purifies our wealth and helps those in need. Allah says:
"Take from their wealth a charity to purify and cleanse them and pray for them. Your prayer is a source of comfort for them. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing." (Quran 9:103)

Zakat helps reduce poverty, especially among Muslims, and ensures that wealth is shared fairly.

4) Hajj (Pilgrimage)
Hajj teaches discipline and unity. It requires financial and physical readiness to perform this journey. Following the rules of Hajj helps us grow spiritually and reminds us of the purpose of life.

These acts of worship bring us closer to Allah when we do them sincerely, seeking His pleasure. They remind us of our purpose: to worship and obey Him.
