According to page 271 , The man said quote, “‘ Too many, too many. It’s not safe. My place was searched last week. It’s not safe and slammed the door in her face.”  This shows why the man turned them down because he didn't want them to get caught, he was probably scared for them and himself.  So that tells us that people are checking his house every now and then to see if he is hiding slaves and he can’t take the risk of having slaves in his house. In conclusion , The man did not want to take a risk at getting caught for having too many runaways in the safe house .

She worked hard as a hotel cook in New Jersey to build a house and earned enough money to live there. She liked Canada because it let colored people participated in government. That meant she could vote. She kept  on freeing slaves while she was sustaining a home all by herself. In page 277 paragraph 3 “She brought out nine more slaves to freedom.” She was never a slave after her escape and live a full life helping slaves to freedom.]]> 2017-02-27 15:21:40 UTC https://padlet.com/kathleenloomis/iu1scy9k47zs/wish/156436897 https://padlet.com/kathleenloomis/iu1scy9k47zs/wish/156440475 The purpose of Harriet Tubman’s trips were gather and collect slaves from the south and guide them to Canada to freedom, using secret passageways and the stars to guide her and the slaves up north.  In the text it says “In December, 1851, when she started out with the band of fugitives that she planned to take to Canada, she had been in the vicinity of the plantation for days, planning the trip, carefully selecting the slaves that she would take with her.” This shows that the reason why she was visiting Maryland was to be the fugitive’s leader and take them to freedom. In conclusion, Tubman was a brave  and considerate 
person that traveled to Maryland to help free slaves and did all she could do to convince them to keep going when they wanted to turn back.

Life changed for the runaway slaves in Canada because they had the freedom of education, housing, and lived wherever they wanted to. The climate changed in Canada, and they weren’t used to it. According to page 277 of the PDF, “St. Catharines had a large colony of ex-slaves, and they owned their own homes, kept them neat and in good repair. They lived in whatever part of town they chose and sent their children to schools.” On page 276 the passage states the quote below, which supports the change in climate for the runaways and Harriet Tubman, “Often she found herself thinking of the beauty of Maryland, the mellowness of the soil, the richness of the plant life there. The climate itself made for an ease of living that could never be duplicated in this bleak, barren countryside” and another one on the same page, “That first winter in St. Catharines was a terrible one. Canada was a strange frozen land, snow everywhere, ice everywhere, and a bone-biting cold the like of which none of them had ever experienced before.” The first quote explains how the slaves had more freedom in Canada than in America and were able to have an education and live wherever they wanted.  The second and third quotes explain how the climate in Canada was different than in America, and it affected Harriet Tubman’s thoughts and the slaves’ experiences. In conclusion the climate change,new terrain, and educational opportunities affected the lives of the runaways and Harriet Tubman and made a turn for the best.

She had the power to sway minds to walking farther North, and the strength to keep saving lives even when her’s was on the line, even when she knew she could be hung, even when people turned her and her group away from warmth and safety she kept moving, because “freedom isn’t bought with dust.” She also speaks influentially with eloquence when she wants someone to do something. Like when one of the runaways wanted to go back to the plantation, her words and also her actions made him keep going. She pulled a gun on him in page 274, and basically said that if he stayed that he would die and this made him run along with them. So I think her speech is an influence to most people. This information has helped me read the story and understand what I was reading better. Her effects on others has really helped me go in depth on what I’ve been reading and writing.
