"In a 2012 Pew Research survey (lol if only in 2012 they knew what was coming...) 87% of teachers polled said that new technologies are creating an easily distracted generation with short attention spans. The pull of the smartphone and its instant gratification has in many ways replaced the deep satisfaction of hard-won, incremental improvement overtime." (84). This is important because it demonstrates the need to support students in shifting their mindset from this idea that "we need instant gratification" to "it feels SO much better when we are successful with something we worked hard on."

"But you mustn't wait an entire year to show your students how much they're improving. It's always worth giving them an opportunity to compare their newly finished project, essay, or presentation video with the one before" (88). My kids just finished an essay that, I thought (and I think they thought) they did pretty well on. I'll bring out their first essay they wrote next week so they can compare their first big piece to this one.
