Detailed Definition of Mathematical Question

Mathematical questions or problems are defined as "non-routine problems that require more than ready-to-hand procedures or algorithms in the solution process". (Buchanan 1987). By that, it is meant that mathematical question is a task or experience which is encountered by an individual for the very first time and, therefore, there is no known procedure for handling it. The individual has to design his/her own method of solution drawing upon the various skills, knowledge, strategies, and so forth, which have been previously learned.
What the individual does in the process of working towards asolution is referred to as problem solving; so the emphasis is not on the answer but on the processes involved. Additionally, Ohio Department of Education (1980), states that a mathematical problem has four elements:
1. A situation which involves an initial state and a goal state.
2. The situation must involve mathematics.
3. A person must desire a solution.
4. Lastly, some obstruction between the given and desired states

Detailed Definition of Scientific Question

A scientific question or problem is one that can lead to a hypothesis and assist us in addressing or determining the reason for an observation. Certain characteristics define a good science question. It should have some answers (real answers), be testable (i.e., can be evaluated by others using an experiment or measurements), and lead to a falsifiable hypothesis (i.e., it should produce a hypothesis that can be shown to fail). (PhD Certified Educator, Tanner L.).
Lastly, a scientific question should not be subjective and it should include independent and dependent variables. In conclusion, scientific questions ask What and How in a way that focuses in on the specific problem to be studied. These questions frame a problem in a way that can be tested (Schmied & Mike Reid, 2008).
