I found it interesting that for the K2 to Grade 2 reading comprehension focused more on short passages that were read aloud often supported by pictures to help with understanding. In comparison, the reading comprehension for Grade 3 to 6 consisted of longer passages and tested the students' understanding through inference and open ended questions encouraging deeper thinking and interpretation.

As for the mock test, I realized that I need to brush up on my spelling rules. I will use the SAFMED method in practicing my phonogram rules and spelling rules over the recess week.

I was surprised that we can assess reading comprehension for children in K to G2.

Upon taking a closer look, the assessment for these children focus less on the children's ability to read, and there are pictures for them to refer to. It also tests the child's ability to figure out the meaning of words based on the story's context- a skill that would be extremely useful for them based on their age.

On the other hand, the reading comprehension assessment for G3 to G6 relies greatly on not just the student being able to read, but also understanding the text and drawing their own inferences.

---

The mock test was useful in helping me understanding which areas I'd have to shore up more.

Reading comprehension assessment - my partner and I were thinking that the K2 to Grade 2 instructions are more detail like what the tester need to say (Say to the student: 'In a few minutes I would like you to read this book out loud. Before you begin you can look through the book and think about what it might say. Use the pictures to help you. Tell me when you are ready to begin reading.') I thought this helps us in starting the assessment.

The mock test was an excellent revision for both my partner and me. While I read out the question to her, I am also testing myself if I say out the sound(s) correctly (e.g. y).

The spelling rules is most probably our weaker area hence will be looking into that during recess week (e.g. flossing rules, Doubling rules, silent final e rule etc)

It helps us identify in which area does the student need help on so that we can do more targetted interventions.

I also really like the mock test - it gives me the confidence when I get the questions right, and it allows me to find out in which area I will need to work on. I also want to thank my partner, Fiona for giving me some tips on ways to study the phonograms!

Comprehension assessment - My phonogram partner and I had similar queries as we ran through the two forms earlier which were addressed during the sharing session. I think as SENO, I would be mindful to assess the reading age of the student first when selecting passages at appropriate level.

Mock phonics test - It was more like any practice session we had as we helped each other to take note of similar sounds that are common to 2 or 3 phonograms. Suggestion is to learn by grouping these phonograms when revising. Works in progress but hey, Practice makes Progress! Jiayou to my phonogram buddy, Yanjie!

To be careful to complete all the tasks, in case I miss out a section that I cannot administer again (e.g. predicting the rest of the text in the middle of the passage when the student has finished reading the passage).

The test was helpful in reminding me which areas I need to work on! I had the opportunity to witness a mentor of mine using and focusing on the paraphrasing part as it was revealed that the student needed more practice in that component.

Had a fruitful discussion regarding the assessment tools. We both agreed that we preferred the Grade 3-6 tool as it is more detailed and structured. However, we also understood the need to assess differently due to age differences and the difference in the type of stories the student reads.

The mock test was a much needed check-point when it came to my progress for learning of phonograms. I realised as I was testing my partner, I was also a bit unsure if I said the sounds correctly. I do have to work harder with my revision, especially spelling rules. But thankful for Colin who shared with me her phonograms notes and how she chunked the info for better recalling!

Have a good break everyone~

I find that this assessment was also helpful as it does not limit the text or book that is used. This gives educators freedom to choose a text that the student might enjoy, thus making the assessment less daunting. However, this freedom also means that the educator has to be well aware of the student’s level of reading and ensure that the text selected is appropriate.

The mock test was very nice to experience.
