Word Study in Action: Making Words Lesson

This making word activity helps the students understand how longer words can be constructed based on common patters. It gives the student a chance to reflect what they have learned and also provides opportunities for ongoing assessments. In this video the teacher gave the students 11 letters, and asked the students to start with building a 2-letter word, through adding and scrambling letters, they eventually built a 7-letter word "oatmeal".

I will use this activity in word lessons with my future students as an intervention specialist, because this is a hand-on engaging activity to help the students understand word structure. It can help them practice spelling too.

Alphabetic Phonics is an ungraded, multi-sensory curriculum. Each daily, one-hour session alternates between ten different activities: alphabet, review of letters, review of sounds, multi-sensory introduction of a new letter, reading, cursive handwriting, spelling, verbal expression, review, and listening.

Through this program I can help my students with LD individually or in a small group.

In this activity the children do Picture sort by initial consonant sound.

I can use this activity with Kindergarten students. I need to prepares cards with picture of familiar objects and cards with letters that correspond with initial consonant sounds of the picture cards. I will start with two columns for the children to sort.

The Fernald Method is a systematic, multisensory instructional approach that incorporates use of the visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile (VAKT) modalities simultaneously. It improves sight word acquisition and word identification skill.

Using this method to help my future students with special learning needs, I will have to follow the four stages, such as selecting the word, writing the word, modeling word tracing, typing the word, etc. in stage one.

They also need instruction that enhances awareness of speech sounds, such as direct teaching with a vowel chart and a consonant chart.

When I work on phonological awareness with older students, besides direct teaching, I will also highlight, describe, segment, and pronounce individual speech sounds if similar sounding words are confused.

Phonics is best taught explicitly and systematically and then practiced extensively until automatic. When phonics skills become automatic, children can shift their attention to comprehending what they read.

When I teach phonics to my students with special leaning needs, I will use strategies such as, teaching letter-sound relationships in a clearly defined sequence, teaching the major sound/spelling relationships of both consonants and vowels, giving children substantial practice in applying knowledge of letter-sound relationships as they learn to read and write, and so on.
