--> falsehoods catch fire / belief that legitimate issure = hoaxes

desire to make sense of events / feed in our existential needs (anxieties / worries about the world, future, ...)
calms people down; sense of control
simple explanation for seemingly complex and random events
fulfill relational need: form communities with like-minded people
theory aligns with a person's political worldview/perception of the world --> discredit other political groups
ex 9/11: left-wing theory: oil - create opportunity to go to war >< right-wing theory: create government headed by the UN (take away guns/freedom)

What happened on 9/11?

Well, what happened that day is that a plane took drugs and didn’t see the two towers and crashed into them. Government wants us to think it was a terroristic attack in order to hide the truth about planes which is that planes aren’t machines but living things and that the drugs they took directly come from the president’s personal reserve.

Just kidding (or not). What really happened that day is that four planes were hijacked by al Qaeda members. Their objective was to destroy several governemental buildings to spread fear and panic into the USA. They destroyed the twin towers and others but one of the four hijacked planes crashed in some fields thanks to brave passengers who took back control of the plane. 3000 people died that day.
