The light symbol is used when describing Hester’s first moment of freedom after being in prison. In this scene the author describes the towns people who gossip and give nasty looks to Hester as she walks through the market place. Further more at this time the light symbolizes her will to remain calm and confident in her actions and continue to go about her day and not allow the town people to bother her.
