Douglas Haig was well known British commander having fought in 2 other wars before hand, he was sent to fight in the river of Somme, however despite his efforts, there were a large number of casualties and his last words were "When armies of millions are engaged, with the resources of great Empires behind them, it will inevitably be long. It will include violent crisis of fighting which, when viewed separately and apart from the general perspective, will appear individually as great indecisive battles."
