Extends: My Cultural Perspective

My cultural experiences have been based upon the “norms” of society. Over 90 percent of American students are educated and finish primary school ("All Stats"). I have grown up in a time and place where education is excelling us towards changing the world and it is very normal to continue education after high school. I completely agree with the fact that education is necessary for true freedom. My view is that freedom directly connects to education. One example of this connection would be the fact that only 3,468 students in Iran have completed primary school this year whereas, in the United States, that number is 1.76 million ("All Stats"). This directly connects to the fact that Iran is not a free country and the United States is.

World Bank research in 2004 showed that the child of an educated mother is more than twice more likely to survive to the age of five than one born to an uneducated mother. HIV/Aids infection rates are halved among young people who finish primary school. So if every child received a complete primary school education, at least 7 million new cases of HIV could be prevented in the course of a decade. At an individual level, a person’s earnings increase with each additional year of schooling they receive. This is especially true for additional years of higher education. So, people who are educated are able to earn more money and support their families, which helps economies to grow faster and poverty rates to decline. Education is an essential building block in the development of an inclusive and peaceful democratic society. According to a report by Save the Children (2009), every year of schooling decreases a male’s chance of engaging in violent conflict by 20% ("News 24"). These are a few statistic examples that prove education leads to freedom and a better way of life. Because my culture is to go through school at a high level, our generations to come will create a free country. During Malala's famous speech, she brought up the fact that peace is necessary for education. In Pakistan, war and violence was causing children to not get an education. She then mentioned that education will lead to freedom.

Through this quote, you can clearly see that since the Shah was not educated, people did not have freedom. Under the rule of the Shah, freedom was imaginary due to his lack of education. Satrapi's dad says, "But he wasn't educated like Gandhi." As we know, Gandhi fought for Indian independence/freedom. Because her dad is relating to the Shah not being like Gandhi, we know that they don't have freedoms. Marjane's dad then goes on to say he was not like the general implying his poor leadership because of no education.

In this piece of textual evidence, Satrapi showed that without a true education, Marji could not understand what her parents were talking about relating to the freedom of the people. When she said, "I realized then that I didn't understand anything," it exemplifies her absence of education relating to the real world. Because she doesn't have that base, she could not understand why people would demonstrate for their freedom. She continues on saying Marji read all the books she could trying to comprehend what is going on, but could not. This displays that what is happening modern day for Marji was not being given to her. She was not receiving necessary education.

While reading this quote, it illustrates Marjane Satrapi's belief that education has the power to give freedom to individuals. In this case, the ability to free individuals from the fallacies of religion and oppression of political dictators. This is shown when Marji says, "Our generation had known secular schools." Marji's parents have stressed the importance of education throughout the story, and I believe that Satrapi is starting to realize that her rebellious roots are planted in the education she received prior to the regime taking control. I know this because she said herself that the reason they were rebellious was that their generation had known secular schools.

This implicit quote relates to my central idea because Marji is confused on why she doesn't have the freedom to not wear the veil due to her insufficient education. We know that she did not have freedom when she said, "We didn't really like to wear the veil." We then see the education standpoint when she continues to say, "especially since we didn't understand why we had to." If she had the education to back up why they had to wear the veils, something could have been done to abolish them and they would have a portion of their freedom back. Because Marji was not educated well, she could not do anything about it.

This quote builds the central idea because it simply presents the fact that because Marji was not educated correctly about the King, she did not have much freedom due to his ruling. Her parents were at a demonstration before Marji expressed her love for the King. They communicated their feelings on the King and Marji then said, "As for me, I love the King, he was chosen by God." This however was not true. The King was not chosen by God and did not give the people freedoms. This is why Satrapi's parents were protesting. Marji thought this only because she was not educated on the topic.

Because Persepolis is a graphic novel, illustrations are very important when getting the author's message across to readers. Satrapi's illustrations are black and white, giving us a clear image of Iran as a black and white country. In my opinion, it is in many ways. They have a stern dress code of black, and strict rules about what is right and wrong. The story is not in chronological order so we see a new perspective looking at it a different way. Personally, if the story were in order, it would feel more like a nonfiction story than a memoir/graphic novel. Satrapi's illustrations are clean and bold, not overwhelming. Looking at the character's faces tells the story by itself, so they were very important when reading. She doesn't need to use descriptors because her pictures accompany the language. Marjane chooses her words very carefully, abandoning flowery language and unnecessary adverbs and adjectives which would have been added if Persepolis were a novel. The central idea of education is necessary to have true freedom can be easily showcased throughout the book because of the simple writing technique and easy to follow frames.

These two frames show how the book is not in chronological order. On page three, Marji is ten and soon after on page six, she is a baby. This change in age happens many times in the book and gives it amazing depth. The shifting back and forth created suspense. I unraveled the past and understood the consequences in the present a little at a time. It created a tension that made Persepolis hard to put down. If Marjane Satrapi wrote Persepolis in a linear fashion, I would have known everything from the beginning, the "why" and the "how" of what happened in the past to create the present situation. Pictures play a very important role in understanding what age Marji is at as well. You can see when she is older compared to when she is just born which helps me follow the story. I would not have followed along with the time shift if Persepolis were written as a novel.

This is another example of how Marjane Satrapi tells an amazing story with minimal words. You can tell what happened in this one frame by mostly the facial expression and assistance of the one word. It makes the book even more interesting when you can make an inference yourself about what will happen next. It helps you to connect to your own point of view. Facial expressions are another way to communicate and develop a story without making the reader bored. I know that if I were to start a novel on the Iranian Revolution, I would not come close to finishing it. While reading Persepolis, I finished the book in two sittings, mainly because of the interesting format and the emotion of characters.
