Introduction of Usrah & Adab in seeking knowledge and Quran

The word Usrah comes from the Arabic word أسرة, which means family. Usrah is a beautiful circle of faith where Muslims come together to strengthen their connection with Allah and with one another. It helps us grow spiritually, share knowledge, and build unity as a family in Islam.

The three pillars of Halaqah (Usrah) are:
-Ta‘aruf
-Tafaahum
-Takaful

As Muslim students, we are reminded to observe the adab of seeking knowledge, to learn with sincerity, respect, and discipline.

We also practice the etiquette of reading the Qur’an, such as being in a state of purity, reciting with focus and humility, and showing respect to the words of Allah. These values guide us to become better individuals and strengthen our faith together.

🌙 The Five Pillars of Islam

The Five Pillars of Islam form the foundation of a Muslim’s life. They are acts of worship that strengthen our relationship with Allah and guide us in daily living.

1️⃣ Shahadah
The testimony that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger. It is the key to faith and the first step to becoming a Muslim.

2️⃣ Salah
Performing the five daily prayers on time. Salah connects us to Allah throughout the day and keeps our hearts guided.

3️⃣ Zakat
Giving a portion of our wealth, usually 2.5% of savings, to those in need. This act purifies our wealth and encourages care for the community.

4️⃣ Sawm
Fasting during the month of Ramadan. Muslims start the fast at Fajr (dawn) and break it at Maghrib (sunset). Fasting teaches us self-control, patience, and empathy for the less fortunate.

5️⃣ Hajj
Performing the pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able. It is a spiritual journey that brings Muslims together from all over the world. However, if someone does not have the financial means, they are not obligated to perform Hajj.

These pillars are simple yet powerful. They keep our faith alive through both belief and action 🕊️.

The Six Pillars of Iman are the core beliefs that shape a Muslim’s view of life. They help build a strong foundation of faith and trust in Allah in both good and difficult times.

1️⃣ Belief in Allah
To believe in His existence, His power, and that He alone deserves worship. This belief gives our lives direction and reminds us that everything is under His control.

2️⃣ Belief in the Angels
To believe that angels are created by Allah from light and they follow His commands without mistake. Although we cannot see them, we trust their important roles, such as recording deeds and delivering revelations.

3️⃣ Belief in the Books
To believe in all the divine scriptures revealed to the prophets, including the Qur’an, Torah, Zabur, and Injil. The Qur’an is the final and complete guidance for all people.

⏳ The Signs of the Hereafter

Before the Day of Judgment comes, there will be signs that show it is approaching. These signs are divided into small signs and big signs. Believing in them is part of our faith in the Last Day.

🌿 Small Signs (العلامات الصغرى)

The small signs are events that happen gradually, many of which have already occurred. They remind us to stay aware and prepare ourselves. Examples include:

The coming of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the final messenger

Widespread ignorance and loss of knowledge

People competing to build tall buildings

Increase of immorality, dishonesty, and disrespect to parents

These signs often happen over time and continue to appear as the world moves closer to the Last Day.

🌟 Big Signs (العلامات الكبرى)

The big signs are major events that will happen near the end of time. When they appear, the Day of Judgment will be very close. Examples include:

The appearance of the Mahdi

The coming of Dajjal (the False Messiah)

The return of Prophet Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام

The rising of the sun from the west

The emergence of Ya’juj and Ma’juj

A great smoke, the Beast of the Earth, and other clear signs

These events will be extraordinary and undeniable, showing that the end is near.

4️⃣ Belief in the Prophets
To believe in all the prophets sent by Allah, with Muhammad ﷺ as the final messenger. Each prophet carried the message of truth, showing us how to live with faith and obedience.

5️⃣ Belief in the Day of Judgment
To believe that everyone will be judged by Allah for their deeds and rewarded or punished accordingly. This belief encourages Muslims to live righteously, seek forgiveness, and stay mindful of their actions.

6️⃣ Belief in Qadr (Divine Decree)
To believe that everything happens by Allah’s will and knowledge. Whether something is good or difficult, it is part of His divine plan.

This week, we talked about Adab or in other words, manners. So, what is Adab?

🔠Linguistically, Adab comes from the Arabic word ( أدب )which is to refine, educate, or discipline

🕌Literally, Adab refers to good manners, morals, and appropriate actions derived from the teachings and instructions of Islam

👳🏻‍♂️Imam Ibnul Qayyim RH explains that Adab in Islam is to practice and always do good deeds. Therefore, Adab becomes a reflection to the person from their habits ranging from their doings and sayings

Not to be confused with Akhlak, Adab is more towards manner and actual practices. It also addresses the proper or improper behavior a person

While Akhlak is more on the morality side. It talks more about philosophy and it only talks about why that kind action is proper or not

That's all for this week, thank you😊

🌙 Reflection & Wish

Throughout this Usrah, I have learned and reflected on many important aspects of Islam — especially the Five Pillars of Islam and the Six Pillars of Iman. I gained a better understanding of how these pillars are not just beliefs or practices, but a complete way of life that strengthens our connection with Allah and guides us in everything we do. I also learned about adab (good manners) — how to respect others, speak kindly, and behave in a way that reflects good character as a Muslim.

This Usrah has reminded me that Islam is more than just rituals; it’s about living with sincerity, humility, and care for others.

For my wish, I hope that our Naqib can speak a little louder next time so everyone can hear clearly and maybe also bring some food or snacks to make the sessions more lively and cure our boredom! Overall, I’m grateful for the experience and the opportunity to learn and share together with my Usrah group.
