The biggest problems of our planet must be considerate as a whole system, interconnected by the misunderstanding of the people of the relationships between those problems, such as poverty, climate change and insecurity. Living systems have the goal of the constant growth also the companies, however, the companies does not understand how the growth of nature is in equilibrium. We forget that as living entities part of an environmental system, our duty is to preserve the life, and for the last ages after Industrial Revolution, we have been destroying our planet. That’s why we need to analyze that supreme system including the impact of the environment.

It is very difficult to understand a system without live it and analyze it. The simple system without comprehension is only a group of events with no meaning, that is why we need the analysis. It is imperative to observe the elements, their relationships and its purpose to find where are the leverage points. Those are areas of opportunity where a little change could trigger a massive change, where all parts involved in the system are comfortable with the situation. For example, companies measure its success by the profits, but how often they consider the environmental impact as part of the costs.

The leverage points in our society lie in the perception of people, which are our parameters to consider success and the accomplishment of the main goals of a system.

A big change in the system implies the design of actions that involves many aspects of the problem. The solution must result as a response to the behavior of social groups, and with support of technologies and innovation. That´s why we have to consider it as a socio-technical transition. It also implies a multi-lever analysis in which we embrace three aspects: culture, as a change of perception to a worldwide view. Regimes, approaching the current situation of the actual system to improve in new methodologies. And niches where pioneers experiment with ideas and seeds of the new system. They are all connected by an element: the stakeholders. The human resources are always involved.

The transition design is the main factor to discover those multi-level actions that will become on leverage points. Instead of simply deduction or making relations using the causality, the transition design guides the thinking process to analyze the problem and all its implications, in order to achieve a powerful solution.

The purpose of backcasting is to propose future scenarios that reflect an ideal of change. The methodology follows steps that involve research on the past and the present of the problem and a lot of study about the connections and possible little changes that could lead the system to a better condition, because it contemplates that to solve large term problems, we must understand the complexity of the system where they lie. But more important, and which is the difference between backcasting and other methodologies, is that the backcasting plans from the future success, instead of the common thinking of an optimistic future based on the past. If we want different results, we have to think in a different way.
