Global Issue: Societal Pressure/Conformity

In both ITW and Crossing the Mangrove, societal pressure is a huge issue. The push to conform to society leads people to escape. In these stories specifically, it leads people to nature. In ITW, Chris is independent and unwilling to conform, and this leads him to his journey. In Crossing the Mangrove, the women who are forced into relation ships flee to the water to escape their lives. I chose this because I think it's important to see how societal pressure is consistent across cultures.

In ITW Chris was a person who had money, but he didnt like it and ended up donating whatever money he had left to give it to people who actually needed it. And in Crossing the Mangrove some of the people were struggling with the money they needed.

Motif; Nature was used as some form of escapism. This shows us that people often used the woods in both crossing the mangrove and Into the wild. People often used the woods to escape everything regarding needing an escape from people or the set social norms.
