Polyphemus first appeared as a savage man-eating giant and serves as the antagonist.  He is described as being greedy, stupid, brutal, and an eater of human flesh. Homer failed to described any of his good points, but we know he was beloved by his father, Poseidon. A more in depth description of him from a website called Theoi describes him being "the celebrated Cyclops in the island of Thrinacia, was a son of Poseidon, and the nymph Thoosa. In the Homeric poems the Cyclopes are a gigantic, insolent, and lawless race of shepherds, who lived in the south-western part of Sicily, and devoured human beings." Pride is the act of thinking you are better than others, the Greek times, having that much pride meant putting yourself above the gods. We see how pride brings down the divine cyclops, refusing to show Odysseus and his men hospitality. Polyphemus’ goal and purpose in The Odyssey is to show the two sides of Odysseus where one side is the hero and the other being a rash idiot, and it was possible by providing obstacles for Odysseus to overcome. The way that a person responds to a challenge says much about the person themselves. Many people when they come to think of "can’t think of a single good thing to say about Polyphemus. Though his guests are rude, so is he — you’re not supposed to eat your guests. He also can’t hold his wine — a stereotypical sign of barbarism." Their most notable characteristic is their infamous one eye, their name itself means "round-eyed". Cyclopes have created powerful and famous tools and weapons like Zeus's lightning bolt, Poseidon's trident, and the helmet of darkness for Hades. "They were also known for going around eating humans."
