A. Snow - We have created writing folders for our students to begin using in our writing small groups. We are excited to see how the students do with these and hope they will be just as excited to use them! We hope these will help our students!

Meighan I have been playing music when students write and allowing as many students as possible to share. I have rearraned the room to where students are with a partner of their choice so that they can turn and talk with a peer easily. Writer's Workshop days are our favorite!

This is a work in progress...
First, I have started playing relaxing music while my students are writing and allowing them to discuss their ideas with a partner. During writers workshop, my students write about whatever they want, but sometimes struggle finding exactly what they want to write about- they have created a heart map to use to help "jog" their memories. Students have been using their sight words lists to help them to spell words that they know/are familiar with. We have done a lot of modelling on how to draw and label their pictures - this seems to have really helped them to be able to come up with staying on topic. We also use a lot of graphic organizers such as can, have, are anchor charts and "adjective"/"fact" graphic organizers. We have been talking about/learning how to use our writing checklists in our writing. Students have been using the exemplars on the wall to check their writing levels.

R. Snow- In our classroom, we have posted all heart words on our wall and placed all sight words for the year in their writing folders to utilize at any time during the day. We have started incorporating a writing checklist and utilizing mentor texts as needed to show students how writing should look. We are looking into other strategies to utilize to ensure our writer's workshop time is utilized wisely and to become more effective.

We have made it a big deals where they get to sit in a special chair in the front of the room, use the mic, and have a special background. They have all really bought into the sharing time. It has really created a "family environment" during our writing time. My kids are loving writers workshop and always get excited for it on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

May: I have been using the student microphone to let them share more often than before. I try to emphasize the writing process of brainstorming and free writing so that they can learn to enjoy the process... not just the conventions of writing. I use my document camera to model what writing can look like and I write while they write.
