Gonzalez was raised in Parkland, Florida and has two older siblings.

Gonzalez served as the president of the ‘gay-straight alliance’ in her school. On 14 February 2018, a gunman opened fire in her school. Due to this, the gunman ended up killing seventeen people and injuring several more. 

Emma hid in the auditorium when the fire alarm went off. Although she tried to go through the hallway to escape, she ended up taking cover. Staying in the auditorium for two hours, they were finally rescued by the police.
