*I am terribly sorry about bringing this up in class but it is quite hilarious in my humble opinion! Truth be told, I rather tend to always remember this word fondly due to my friends whom taught me this first crass word in German lmao. It is still a running joke!

As for Liebling, I picked up the word back when I read a heart-felt fiction novel about a German family immigrating to the US, for the Oma would fondly refer to her grandchildren as such.

Lastly, I got introduced to the recipe of Schnitzels when my friend told me that was his favorite childhood food. He's currently an undergrad studying law in Germany (They don't have a separate curriculum for law, unlike us and the US. Instead they study law for five years in college and then take the bar exam, unlike here wherein we still need to enter law school).

[Gab Dotado]

RULES RULES RULES
Apparently, Germans are real sticklers for rules. If you can get away with jaywalking in the Philippines despite the "Huwag tumawid, may namatay na rito" sign, you certainly can't get away with it in Germany as the locals won't be afraid to tell you off. (Germans are bluntly honest)

Bonus: You also can't make noise during Sundays or hang your clothes in the balcony. There's a special hanger place in the laundry room for that because there are rarely any dryers in apartments!

PFAND
When I went to Dubai earlier this year, one of the things that I absolutely adored was the EXPO. I went to the Germany pavilion and was absolutely blown away by their steps in technology and sustainability, which lead me to researching more about it.

One of the things I found was the Pfand. It's a bottle return system where, as the name implies, you return used bottles to be recycled. And here's the best part--you get money in return for it!

OKTOBERFEST
I'm not going to lie, I always thought this was just some festival advertisement by local beer companies like San Miguel because I always saw it in those commercials, but I only recently learned what it ACTUALLY is.

It's this big beer festival in Munich (München) where thousands of people gather to party in tents, ride rides, or go on an eating spree with all the stalls present in this big carnival-like celebration (while possibly wearing dirndls or lederhosens!)

In other parts of Germany, there are also different versions of Oktoberfest under the category of "Volksfest" but Oktoberfest remains the biggest in all of Germany.

Aika Shimomura

In fact, "nein" was the only German word I knew before opening the modules. It was the word that my German-raised cousin used to say when we were still kids whenever the adults were teasing him.

Despite this, I never thought of the language as something that I could not learn. Some examples of famous German classical music composers are Bach, Beethoven, and Pachelbel. Meanwhile, some Austrian classical music composers who also have the German language prominent in their works are Schubert and Mozart. One of the compositions I know is Bach's "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140," also known as "Sleepers Wake" which is a church cantata composed for the 27th Sunday after Trinity.
- Joy Arcigal

It’s admittedly very shallow and I vaguely recall them at best. But the one aspect I know most of about Germany is their cuisine.

My kuya is a self-proclaimed foodie and would often request for our family to eat at one of his fave restaurants, Brotzeit for their fladen and sausage dishes. Because of him, I’ve also become familiar with different types of wurst, such as bratwurst and frankfurters. I don’t hold the same enthusiasm over food but I’ve come to like sauerkraut, which is fermented cabbage, as it goes well with salad.

I’d like for my knowledge to transcend over just it being food during this semester, so I’m excited to learn more in this class!

- Sam Jacoba
