What would it take for everyone in this room to feel safe exploring mathematics together? To revise thinking, be unsure, or experience joy publicly? What can we agree to do for one another? What do we need from one another?” NOTE: everyone has edit rights, so use care not to overwrite another :) by Cindy Wiste

Example: It would be great to recognize that every human is highly intelligent. All humans have gaps in mathematical understanding, depending on what "their' next step is. Even nuances in understanding 'old' topics qualifies as new learning. So, no matter the discussion, it would be AWESOME for everyone to reflectively listen and watch for bold new learning, or nuanced, new learning.

I think that everyone involved has to admit when they make a mistake. So even the teacher needs to point out when they have made a mistake or were wrong. This teaches others that no matter your level we are all human and its okay to make mistakes. I think as a group we need everyone to be open to discussion and help each other. This is my second semester with most of these classmates and I think it's a great group that is supportive of one another and is great at having discussions! We can agree to be open minded and supportive always!

I have taken several classes with this cohort and I feel we have built trust between us. We need to continue building trust by sharing openly, asking questions when uncertain, and celebrate each other's progress. With clear expectations and communication, we can all help each other succeed through teamwork.

I think that creating a safe space for exploring mathematics together requires an environment built on trust, respect, and support. This involves fostering a culture of openness where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities, encouraging collaborative and inclusive learning, and celebrating successes, big or small. Active listening, a growth mindset, and the belief that abilities can develop with effort help create an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and revising thinking. To make this environment work, we must offer support, respect different approaches, and actively participate in discussions while being patient and understanding. By practicing these principles, we can ensure a positive and enjoyable math experience for all.

Our understanding of mathematics is as unique as each of us. And so, in a class setting we have the ability to learn from each other as much as we learn from a teacher. Taking risks can be intimidating but I believe that being supportive, showing what we know and helping others encourages the type of environment that is conducive to mathematical learning. We all have something to share, and something to learn. Different perspectives can help bridge learning gaps but we'll never know unless we are brave enough to take a chance and share. Reflecting, pausing before answering, and asking clarifying questions are also positive ways to encourage the learning progression in our class.
