To recap, my objectives for this project were
 -To learn the extraordinary, interesting and booming industry of Food & Beverage.
 -To obtain new experience outside of the medical field, in terms of challenges, functionality, expertise, skill sets and so on.
 -To be able to appreciate and embrace different job scopes in the working world, and learn the ropes along the way.
 Alhamdulillah, I daresay that I have managed to achieve all the above objectives, successfully, with even more than I had expected, as I learned way more. This includes working with co-workers in a new field with each of different backgrounds, building new friendships and memories with others, picking up tips and tricks within hotel management as well, and most importantly gained so much priceless experience that has surely moulded me into someone more competent and knowledgeable. 

 

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

In this project, what I enjoyed or liked the most was probably the less stress-inducing work that was present, while also forming a ohana I was able to build and find within the working environment. There was no denying that before entering, I had a lot of doubts and fears regarding the work environment, the people I will be dealing with, my bosses and higher ups, any toxicity, inability to cope with work stress, work stress on its own, so on and so forth, and was gladly proven wrong once I started working and progressed throughout these 4 weeks, coping better than ever, while learning so much in a short period of time. I was able to adapt and overcome my fears, and formed my comfort working environment and family within. I had very amazing and cooperative wo-workers, friendly and hardworking supervisor and manager, even more friendly chefs that manage to joke around and have fun while settling the orders that keep coming in. There are days when work is stressful and many guests, and there are days where it can be very relaxing and boring, but having to have felt these days and in between, is somewhat calming and satisfying, knowing that this experience will toughen me for what’s to come, and also appreciate and understand more on how fast and efficient we have to be in the working field, and adapt accordingly as fast as possible. 

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

Alhamdulillah, so far along this project, and  as mentioned before, nothing is all smooth sailing in life, ups and downs are bound to happen, and yet here I am, typing this report out happily with satisfaction knowing either I considered the challenges as normal daily life, or I toughened myself up and faced it with flying colours that I did not realize it was a challenge on its own. Personally, I believe that the most challenging thing I faced was most probably just peak holiday or weekend seasons, where the hotel is fully booked and guests will fill up the coffeehouse for the breakfast buffet, multiple room service orders, many VIPs checking in, so on and so forth. However, having the mindset of adapt and overcome, I must have not took it too much as a challenge, and instead just considering it as a slightly busier few days that will pass, and along the way of course I learned to become more efficient, worked faster and smarter, while maintaining the good image of the hotel, and professionally handling it all, and myself of course. It was and will always be a good learning experience to learn new things and face new challenges, to become a better and stronger person, all the more wiser.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

All in all, besides achieving the objectives laid out, and with a bonus of having a good and friendly environment, I think what really worked most was my character development. I learned from each and every one there, not just solely on the work, but in terms of mindset, time management, critical thinking, because before entering I had my mind dead set on revamping and further improving myself as a human being, as I am very confident that this character building will be very essential and important for me in my future endeavours. Alhamdulillah, self-reflecting and comparing my old self to currently after these 4 weeks, I have managed to improve myself as a better human being.  

5. What can be improved in this project?
 
 In my opinion, it is not fair to say that this project is perfect either as if we think that way, then we will not be thinking of improvements that may be crucial. On the other hand, this has been such a fun experience, truly eye opening and skill acquiring, I wouldn’t mind doing it all again. The challenges and peak moments is what made it truly a learning experience. For improvement wise, maybe I could have tried exploring other departments instead of just F&B, such as front desk, bellman, and so on. However, this was not a choice for me as I had to follow the hotel management, so I took what I got, and am grateful for it. Another thing that I believe could have been improved is the SSM submission, as the hotel management took some time to provide the SSM, and thankfully my supervisor is very understanding, and I wish I didn’t need to have to cause any inconvenience on it.

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

Yes, all objectives are fulfilled for this project. First and foremost, now I have a good understanding of Korean culture, where they have a complex honorifics system when communicating to someone who is much older than them.

Next, throughout this project I am able to communicate in Korean which I can apply when I meet up with Korean people. Lastly, my writing and reading skills on the Korean language has improved as I have found a proper way to learn it effectively.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

I've always wanted to study Korean, and this elective posting gave me the chance to finally cross that item off my list. The best aspect of learning this language is that it makes watching Korean dramas and movies more fun since I can understand words and sentences. The professor in charge of this course was incredibly good and helpful,  because it's simple to understand and follow the lesson.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

The hardest aspect of learning a new language is getting the sentence sounds exactly right. To speak with the same ease as a native speaker, it takes time. I am therefore delighted to be taking part in this class. In addition, I intend to enroll in additional Korean classes to widen my knowledge of the language.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

The development of my character, in my opinion, has been what has actually worked during this online learning experience. I had a lot of doubts when I first started this online learning because I was hesitant to try new things. However, after a few lessons, I discovered that I was enjoying it, which finally increased my confidence and caused me to doubt myself less. I believe I can learn other languages because all I have to do is trust myself to challenge new things. Although the process may be challenging, in the end it will be for my benefit. In addition, learning a new language drives me to step outside of my comfort zone, which increases my confidence in my ability to grasp the language.

5. What can be improved in this project?

I believe that this project has to be enhanced in a number of ways. In order to assess our performance, there should first be an interaction session with the coordinator. Next, I should manage my time effectively by setting aside 2 hours every day for my online learning in order to stay on track and maintain my attention. In addition, I should complete the activities and exercises before the scheduled time in case the internet connection fails.

 

Yes I have fulfilled the objectives of my project which were to learn a new language for communication, to have some exposure to another language and to spend my elective posting in a productive way. I am grateful that I chose mandarin as my elective posting course because now I will able to understand and speak in Mandarin language.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

 

I really enjoyed everything throughout this project. The study materials provided were very beginner-friendly which help me in learning that language. I really enjoyed answering the quiz provided in the course. It motivated me to focus and revise the lessons. Practicing the language with my nephew was really fun because he will correct my pronunciation which will be really funny but helped me a lot throughout this course.

 

Initially I find it hard to pronounce the words but with practice I am able to pronounce it correctly. It was also quite challenging to understand without the subtitle initially but as time goes, it became easy.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

 

I have completed my final assignment with a mark of 95%. This assignment was graded by our peers in the course. This has really worked well for me as I have put in a lot of effort.

 

Things that could be improved in this project is I should have tried writing the Chinese characters but since it was not provided I hope to practice it in the future.

Even though I am not very well versed in using the skills I learned yet, but the past four weeks were indeed a great milestone on my journey in learning Hangul. 

I enjoyed every single moments learning Hangul! I felt the sense of accomplishment every time I learned something new! Since the beginning of Korean culture became a trend after K-drama or K-pop, we always hear people adding some Korean in our daily lives communication. However, we only can understand some basic terms because we are not native Korean. Now, due to the Elective Posting, I finally gave myself a chance to start the journey of learning Korean properly. I enjoyed a lot when I finally knew what is the meaning behind each words and how to form the structure of the sentences! Learning is undeniably the happiest thing in the world!

Due to the project I chose was an asynchronous online course, thus when I found that some materials were confusing, I had difficulties in solving my doubts as I did not have a tutor who I could consult. I had to Google it myself and sort it out through some blogs or YouTube videos. But luckily, I went to Seoul for the conference, thus I got one more way to seek for help! My Korean friends are helpful and patient enough in answering my questions. I am really grateful for the whole Elective Posting. 

I always enjoy learning new things. I have a long list to do for my free time (Latte art, yoga, music, swimming, Spanish etc…) but as medical students, we always have a shorter school break. Fortunately because of the Elective Posting, I could tick out learning Korean on my checklist. Throughout this posting, I found out some of the pronunciations of Hangul is quite similar with Mandarin or my dialect Hokkien, thus it helped me to pick up the language faster, which also further increased my interest towards this language. I think it was the best thing of learning in this project.

I think my time allocation should be further improved in this project. As the timeline of the whole Elective Posting was not clearly instructed at first, I was quite rushed to finish the course of Week 1. Fortunately, the course I chose was online and asynchronous, I could flexibly learn anytime, which enable me to finish the course on time. 

Yes, I had learned proper technique of baking cookies which are delicious and presentable. Also, different way of baking it. Either using oven, microwave or just chill it inside the refrigerator. Also, all of the objectives were met. I even rolling some money on selling the cookies to my friends and family. I had a few customers that repeat order and promoting my product to their circle. On the other hand, the cookie brand is the one that I lack the most because I just directly selling my stuff without building the branding first. It is my advantage that I have a pool of people that I can sell off a product to. I learnt a lot in this elective posting course even that I did not write to include in my objectives.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

I enjoyed the most when my customer gives honest feedback about how good my products are. Even to the point when they tell their friends to try it. Very much love for repeating the order and became my regular customer. Basically, I enjoyed when other people enjoyed my product the most.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

I think the most challenging thing about my cookies project is to maintain the quality of the product at any time. Because I had a really great review about the cookies from my friends. However, on the other batch of the cookies, I had a really bad review from customer. They said that my cookies are salty despite I changed from salted butter to unsalted butter. So, it is hard to maintain the end product of the cookies if you messed up with the ratio of the recipes and ingredients. 

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

I am really grateful because everything is going to work at the end despite the challenges that U had to go through. As, I mentioned above almost all of my objectives are achieved. But there are a lot  of challenged and I learnt a lot in the process.

5. What can be improved in this project?

Maybe I can have a big personal kitchen for my project, instead of sharing my parents’ house kitchen.

I'm certain that I can comprehend and converse in Chinese right now using simple words and phrases like "hello," "tell me about yourself," "what time is it," "tell me about the colours" and how many people are there in my family.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

I enjoyed the segment about being a consistent and successful learner throughout the semester break. 

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

Since the Chinese language takes note of tone marks in every word people say, I found it difficult to pronounce things in Chinese correctly.
 
4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

The study schedule I created for this course has been successful for me since it allows me to do various things fast and efficiently.

5. What can be improved in this project?

By include more learning objectives in the list, I believe this project can be improved because doing so will allow me to learn more.
