What are Renewable cotton and Non-renewable cotton?

Renewable cotton is grown from natural seeds, and no pesticides or other harmful chemicals are used.

Non-renewable cotton uses genetically modified seeds in cotton farming. Genetically modified seeds can speed up the growing process by receiving chemicals. And they are customized to develop bug resistance, but as the bugs become more powerful, more pesticides are required.

The difference between renewable and non-renewable cotton

1. The method of growing cotton

2. Effects on the environment

It is hard to grow renewable cotton since it is grown from natural seeds and production is not economical. But it is not harmful to the environment.

Non-renewable cotton is easier to grow because production is economical. Although it is easier, it is harmful to the environment with a lot of chemical usage.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is environmental quality. In order to have healthy environment, we need non-toxic natural resources including clean air, water, and soil. Healthy environment is a supporter of sustainability.

Renewable cotton (organic cotton) is sustainable because it is environmentally friendly. Non-renewable cotton (conventional cotton) is not sustainable because it is not environmentally friendly.

But why is non-renewable cotton being used more, when renewable cotton is better?

Cotton farmers want to produce a lot of cottons, so they use non-renewable cotton. The world population is rising and the demand for more cotton is becoming high. So farmers tend to make more non-renewable cotton because non-renewable cotton is economically better than renewable cotton, resulting in creation of toxic natural resources that harm the environment.

In order to have healthy environment, the demand for renewable cotton (organic cotton) rises. Organic cotton farmers use technical and scientific innovations including crop rotation, intercropping, and other methods to manage the supply of organic cotton.
