The geographic challenge that the sea provides is a problem for Gilgamesh. Normally, the sea will rot away anything it comes in contact with. Gilgamesh avoids this by making a sail. This shows how Gilgamesh is powerful because he cheats inevitable death. It also is symbol of mortality, that everything must die. Because Gilgamesh is able to get across, he is finding a way to overcome mortality.

The flower has thorns, just as immortality has its setbacks like watching everyone die. The flower is eaten by a serpent. Gilgamesh is always ruining his own chances to bring back Enkidu like smashing the stones and leaving the flower on the ground. Gilgamesh's grief always keeps him from helping because every situation like the Scorpion people , he isn't thinking rationally. Gilgamesh's pride and overconfidence is what killed Enkidu and is why he is never able to get or deserve eternal life.

Gilgamesh was a cruel ruler, he made his people slave over the building of the walls, and let them go to waste. In the end, the walls stand strong, even though Gilgamesh has not been there to tell them. He now values the walls because they bring structure and represents society, He misses civilized life and since he has failed, he realizes how he had been to his people.
