The United States, even as late as 1917 maintained only a small army, smaller than 13 of the nations and empires already active in World War 1. After the passage of The Selective Service Act in 1917, 4 million men were drafted into the military service. By the summer of 1918 about 2 million US soldiers had arrived in France. By November 11, 1917 approximately 10,000 fresh soldiers were arriving in France daily. America's “Doughboys” traveled on ships to France since air transportation was still a dream to most. The ships were often crowded and uncomfortable, with bunks stack several layers high. The American soldiers experienced great deal of hardship on the Western Front in France and Belgium, because no matter how realistic their training was, nothing could have prepared them for the mass devastation on the western front.

America's entry into World War I was very wanted by the allies since they desperately needed their military power on the destroyed western front after the loss of men at the Somme and Verdun. When the Germans launched their great offensive of March 1918, it caused American General John Pershing to realize that he needed to change his course of action. It was agreed that in June, more American troops would be sent to France. In June and July 1918, over 584,000 men were sent to France from America. The German Army couldn't even hope to match the troop numbers in such a short amount of time. By August 1918, there were nearly 1,500,000 American troops in France, Germany could only gather 300,000 troops. The allies were then planning a major attack against Germany in 1919, which would be led by 100 American divisions. Due to the humongous amount of American Troops that Germany knew they could not compete with, they had to find a way out of fighting. This led to the Armistice in November 1918, which then led to The Treaty of Versailles in June 1919. The end of World War I can ultimately be credited to America for bringing in such a sufficient amount of troops.

Problems

Soldiers faced many problems during World War I, many of which occurred in the trenches. Death was a daily occurrence in the trenches, even when no attack was launched or defended against. Many men were buried as a result of large shell bursts. Troops were advised to not look over the top of the trench into No Man's Land, but many men died on their first day to due to a precisely aimed sniper's bullet. The biggest problem that soldiers faced was most likely the rat infestation in the trenches. Millions of rats infested trenches, most would feed off of dead soldiers bodies and could grow to be the size of a cat. Soldiers greatly feared these rats and would attempt to get rid of them via gunfire, bayonets, and even by clubbing them to death. Along with the rats, lice was a neverending problem to the soldiers and caused a painful disease called trench fever. Even though there were many health problems that would occur in some of the soldiers, daily boredom affected all of the soldiers.

Economic, Social, and Political Contribution

The American soldiers of WWI contributed economically because it cost the United States a lot of money to train the soldiers for many months. The U.S. also had to provide the soldiers' food, water, clothes, weapons, tools, and other necessities.
Socially, soldiers tell the story of war and what exactly soldiers experience before, during, and after wars. Without soldiers we probably wouldn't even know as much about wars and the military as we do now. The soldiers in WWI documented and photographed so much of their experience which can easily be found on the internet today.
Before entering the Great War the United States needed more men, for bigger troops. To get those big troops that the U.S. very much wanted, the United States Government drafted many men, and by the end of the war, almost 3 million men had been drafted. That was a huge political contribution.

World War I was a very scary experience for many Americans, because it was one of the first big wars to occur and for the IUnited States to be a part of. It had a huge impact on families because as soldiers had gone to fight in the war, women had to replace men in the workplace so it put a lot of pressure on the older children in the family due to them having to take care of household duties and younger children. Children were also very scared about their fathers' going into the war because they didn't know whether or not they would see them again. The majority of men who returned from war were suffering from serious mental, emotional, and physical injuries and it put a lot of stress on their family because they were the ones who had to take care of them and help them recover. Many men who came back from the war were also not the same person they were before they left, which was a hard reality that families had to face and deal with. Families also had to deal with the loss of their loved ones who died in the war and did not return home.

Level 4, Weapons and Technology Then vs. Now

In the early 20th century and during World War I the common weapons that soldiers used was the model 1884 which was a small rifle and later upgraded to the Model 1888 which could hold a bayonette. The United States Rifle, Caliber .30, M1, was the first semi-automatic rifle in the world to be issued to the military and was very helpful in combat. Weapons then became much more advanced in the early 21st century, they were lightweight, air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine rifles, which were very efficient. Chemical weapons in war also developed from tear gas to the very deadly mustard gas. Currently weapon technology is very advanced, there are nuclear missles, ships, submarines, and drones. Ocurring right now is a threat from North Korea that the U.S will be hit with their "advanced" nuclear missles. Due to the development of weapon technology leading up to these very dangerous nuclear missles, society is severley affected, many people are very afraid and very worried for their lives. The development of weapons and certain technology has also made war much more violent, affecting society because many soldiers, friends, and family from their country are being killed.
