Why I focus: 

 

 Since puberty, I’ve become the girl who really care about my own body shape and often feel anxious about it.-------- I am the victim of negative body image and I want to against it.

 

 Through getting along with the people around me(friends, family), I’ve found that I am not the only one who has negative body image, many people especially woman have the same situation.----- body image exists in our normal life, it’s the group issue that need be concerned.

 

 I once watched a TED Talks called Enough with fear of fat, and it's speaker was a fat women called Kelli Jean Drinkwater (Link : https://www.ted.com/talks/kelli_jean_drinkwater_enough_with_the_fear_of_fat?referrer=playlist-powerful_art_activism) One issue she mentioned in this speech is impressed me : " like any form of systematic oppression, fatphobia is deeply rooted in complex structures, like capitalism, patriarchy and racism."  Because of this sentence, I realized that body shaming and Appearance anxiety is no just about one person, it's about the whole group and society.  -------Therefore, I wanted to reflect how body image related to the social issue of capitalism and patriarchy impact individual.

In China, most people prefer girls has the double-fold eyelids, which they think girls with double-fold eyelids has big eyes and that’s make girls looks more beautiful. With this standard of beautiful, the girls with single eyelid tend to unsatisfied with their eyes and would change them by using eyelid tape or having double eyelid operation.

Therefore , I plan to use my camera to focus on eyes that has single eyelids, and the eye full of tear. Below this eye, there is text “ Small eyes---can’t see her eyes”, which show how people make fun of girls with single eyelids.

I will send visitors some pictures without any captions and ask them to write short text about their thoughts on these pictures. After writing, I will guide them to look at the back of the pictures, which shows the strengths or achievements of the people being photographed.

§   We rarely question why we have such contempt for people of size

§   Instead, we value mental health, self-worth and how we feel in our bodies.

§   Reclaiming yourself can be one of the most gorgeous acts of self-love and can look like a million different things, from hairstyles to tattoos to body contouring, to hormones to surgery and yes, even weight loss. It’s simple, is your body, and you decide what’s best to do with it.

§   Reclaiming space that are often prohibitive to bigger bodies: catwalk , public swimming pools, prominent dance stages. 

§   By advocating for self-determination and respect for all of us, we can shift society’s reluctance to embrace diversity and start to celebrate the myriad ways there are to have a body.
