My project: briefly idea

In this project, I have a roughly ideas on project. Therefore, I am going to research the topic about the body image for my first research.
Since puberty, I have been surrounded by different voices: "you need to be thinner", "you will look better with long hair, don't cut short", "you don't fit in this dress"....
These voices or "advice" (what they say it is) often make me feel anxious about my appearance. And I found that I am not the only one has negative body image, many pepople have the same situation, including the one who give you the "advice". So it does affect everyone's life.

To research this issue, I once watched an TED Talks called Enough with fear of fat, and it's speaker was a fat women called Kelli Jean Drinkwater. (Link:https://www.ted.com/talks/kelli_jean_drinkwater_enough_with_the_fear_of_fat?referrer=playlist-powerful_art_activism) One issue she mentioned in this speech is impressed me : " like any form of systematic oppression, fatphobia is deeply rooted in complex structures, like capitalism, patriarchy and racism." Beause of this sentence, I realized that body shaming and Appearance anxiety is no just about one person, it's about the whole society. According to this , I would research how do the body image and society affect each other by interviewing the people around me and finding online materials, and make it for the background of my project.

Then, according to this background, I would research what exactly way that judge and attack our body and lead to negative body image. It will be showed according to different groups in society, like media, doctors, young people, parents and different genders. I need to find advertising, tagline, viedo that all about peoples' appearance, and record what people around me say about appearance.

Finally, I want to take some picture for myself or others, my shots will focus on the ''disadvantage'' of our bodies, like flab, armpit hair,
tattoos, acne and so on. And I will pose the comment that I collect at step 2 on these pictures.
I think to complete this would be a bit difficult. Because I haven't created activism work before, it's a new field for me to do this project. I need to search lots of materials to know the body image and generate my own idea on it, it does take a lot of effort to finish this project. But I still feel excited for this project , cos I've always been concerned about the issue of body image but haven't had a chance to research it seriously. And the next step, I begin to interview the people around me and visit the art work from Kelli Jean Drinkwater, and pay attention to media content that is about body image.

Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, 27, who lives in Brooklyn, is an oil painter of black and Iranian descent. Every day in this neighbourhood, Fazlalizadeh endured hisses and comments from men on the road. "You are treated like a piece of meat and you exist to be eaten by men."
Sixty-five percent of women surveyed have experienced Street Harassment, according to a 2014 study by nonprofit Stop Street Harassment. Of those surveyed, 57 percent had experienced verbal harassment, 41 percent had been physically harassed, 23 percent had been sexually harassed in public and 20 percent had been stalked.
In 2012, Fazlalizadeh decided to stop being silent. She created a self-portrait titled 'Stop Telling A Woman To Smile'

T

Fazlalizadeh believes that street art is more powerful than paintings trapped in galleries and studios. "Men who would harass women on the street and women who have been harassed will walk by these works and feel something because it's in the place where the harassment happens every day."

Fazlalizadeh went on to create countless posters, each depicting a different woman with a caption that reflected the harassment they had personally experienced. Fazlalizadeh tries to include women with different experiences and perspectives in her portraits.

When I first saw the poster that Fazlalizadeh made, I was attracted by the caption of "stop telling woman to smile" and the serious look of the portrait. Normally, we are encouraged to smlie to others, which means we need to be kind for someone else. But Fazlalizadeh advocate don't tell women to smile", that's because she want to use these activism posters to against Street Harassment.
I think her work is very meaningful and compelling. These posters that challenge the status quo can raise awarness of how terrible the street Harassment is. I can feel the unhappy and anger from these serious portraits, and with differents captions, they looks have strong will to safeguard their rights and interests and tell " we have the right not to laugh" to the world. Becides, it is more powerful when these posters as the street art to be showed, it gives power to woman and tell "stop" to the man who would harass woman on the street.

A few days ago, I had to search many materials of two artworks and use some of them for my eassy that about analysing two projects.
At the beginning, I wanted to focus on the topic about body image after watching the Ted Talks named Enough with fear of fat. At the same time, I very appreciated the work " stop telling woman to smlie" , and the issue Tatyana Fazlalizadeh concerned is about street harassment, which I thought the sexual verb harassment is relevant to the body image at that time. So I began to find the source of body image and research the project the two artists done
However, it was quite a bit difficult when I researching, because after fully understanding body image, I realized it is very hard to link the street harassment to body image. What's worse, I found it hardly have view points about body image in the Tatyana Fazlalizadeh's project. So I was wondering should I change the issue or the artist or not , and that's made me feel anxious and stressed cos I probably had to do my work all over again. To clear my idea, I looked back the notes of general perspective that had been originally recorded. After that, fortunately,I recognized the harm of Lookism and the judgement of woman's body could be the same issue that both reflected on these two projects.
When I was writting my eassy, I felt my speed of writting is very slow, I guess that's because I lack of writing experience. Besifes, it was very hard for me to use sources to support my opinion in my eassy, because I posed lots of informantion on Activism sources log, I had to spend time to select them and even some of them disturbed my thesis ideas. Because of these problems, I felt very tired and even had a headache after finishing essay.
The results weren't what I was expecting. I over the word limit by a lot cos I wanted to include many ideas and many sources when I was writing. These problems make me think that I actually did not do the work well in the early stage, which led to additional work when I was writing in the later stage. Next time, I'll do it differently, Instead of selecting lots of informations when writting, I will make a plan to structure my essay and evaluate sources before writting.

My design is about take photos for the unsatisfied part of body with caption that insipred from interviewee and media. The idea is inspired from two artists'work, which Tatyana Fazlalizadeh used caption on her poster and kelli Jean Drinkwater used her body to against. So I want to combine these two factors that are body and caption to create a art work and reflect the issue ------the negative effect of appearance evaluation. I tried this design because I wanted to see whether people would feel the horror of Lookism and reflect on their attitude towards people's unsatisfied body.
But once in the course, a classmate provided a question:"Will the audience be biased and misunderstood the ideas behind your artwork?" And I found out that simpliy pose caption on the photo might casue a mistake understanding of encourageing people to attack others' appearance, that's completely deviate my opinion. So I made a change on my design, I decide to add something new on my design, which means I would get some dark factors on the photo, like blood, tear to show the lookism's violence.
I leaned that the design of artwork need to be consider a variety of factors that are not planned and contantly improved in order to convey our ideas correctly.

Jean Kilbourne THE NAKED TRUTH: ADVERTISING’S IMAGE OF WOMEN

The pressure on women to be young, thin, beautiful is more intense than ever before

The image of advertising isn’t real. It’s artificial. It’s constructed. It’s impossible. But real women and girls measure ourselves against it every single day. Of course it affects female self-esteem and it affects how men feel about the very real women in their lives.

Women’s bodies are dismembered in ads, and ad after ad for all kinds of products. And sometimes the body is not only dismembered. It’s insulted. E.g. “ Your breasts may be too big, too saggy, too pert, too flat, too full, too far apart, too close together, too a cup, too lopsided, too jiggly, too pale, too padded, too pointy, too pendulous or just two mosquito bites, but with Dep styling products, at least you can have your hair the way you want it.”

Girls tend to feel fine about them selves at their eight, nine, ten years old. But they hit adolescence and they often hit a wall, and certainly part of this wall is this terrible emphasis on physical perfection

Advertising often normalizes and trivializes battering, sexual assault and even murder. Some ads ( like sexualized images) create a climate in which woman are often seen as things, as objects And certainly,, turning a human being into a thing is almost always the first step towards justifying violence against that person. And that step is constantly taken with women and girls.
