  • The discrimination begins with other individuals' perspectives of what is "normal", which then shapes beliefs and norms of physical and social environments. This eventually leads anyone affected by physical, mental, or emotional impairments, to be treated differently from their "normal" peers.

  • People with mental disabilities were treated unsympathetically, in a way that society didn't "approve of them". Any unusual behavior or low amounts of labor were seen as a "burden to society". 
  • People with physical disabilities were common in this era. Many farmers weren't trained well and used dangerous machinery. As a result, accidents would occur.

  • During this time, mental illnesses were just in their infancy. Some treatments for mental illnesses were
    • electroshock therapy
    • camphor(a substance occurring in some essential oils)
    • insulin
    • malaria injections
    • lobotomies (removing parts of the brain; performed a lot from the 30s to the 40s treating schizophrenia, severe anxiety and depression)

  • Sadly enough, before the 1930s, disabled people were often abandoned by their families and neglected since they viewed them as "unhealthy" or defective". 
  • Around the 1950s people with disabilities were put into institutions against their own will by their families. They endured abuse, neglect, substantial health and safety conditions, deprivation of rights and so much more.
