Brazilians are clearing forests in order to produce enough food like soybeans and cattle in order to make ends meet for their families. An increased clearing of forests came when the downturn of the economy hit Brazil. Also the Amazon is being cleared because of a potential to run a railway through the forests. This plan would lead to more deforestation but could also lead to accelerated exploitation of their resources. Also cities are growing, causing expansion into the forests nearby.
