Garret Hardin wrote an essay explaining that the difficulty in solving environmental problems was the common areas of land people had to share with each other..

Hardin's main point was that someone or a group must take responsibility for maintaining a certain resource or it will eventually become depleted. This point can be applied today in our society, and how we use our resources.

Developed countries have higher incomes, slower population growth, diverse industries, and a stronger social support. They use 75% of the worlds resources, while they only make up 20% of the world's population. While undeveloped countries have lower incomes, more agriculture based communities, and rapid population growth. At the rate devolving countries use resources, it creates more waste and pollution per person in devolving countries.

The Amazon is being destroyed for more farmland. Brazilians are clearing forests in order to produce enough food like soybeans and cattle in order to make ends meet for their families. An increased clearing of forests came when the downturn of the economy hit Brazil. Also the Amazon is being cleared because of a potential to run a railway through the forests. This plan would lead to more deforestation but could also lead to accelerated exploitation of their resources. Also cities are growing, causing expansion into the forests nearby. By doing this, it has caused a drought because there in not enough rainfall to sustain the population's needs.

They have been able to produce enough due to the technological advances and the increased farmland. But as the world population grow Brazil is expected to up their production rates 60%. Some say that the environment will be put under extreme pressure when this time comes.

After looking at this article, Brazil supports Hardin's theory. I say this because the government has taken a little responsibility bu not much which means their deforestation problems, farmland expansion, food production needs and growing cities are going to use most of their natural resources now. As a result, in few years there won't be enough space or resources left for the Brazilian people to use and enjoy.
